Senior Designer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Designer based in the United States.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced book designer to create sophisticated, high-quality interiors across lifestyle, cookbook, children’s, gift, specialty, and nonfiction titles.
You’ll transform editorial concepts into polished layouts that balance strong visual storytelling with excellent typography and production precision.
The role offers significant ownership across the full design lifecycle, from initial concepts and typesetting through proofing and print-ready delivery.
You’ll collaborate closely with editorial, production, and art direction teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven publishing environment.
Your expertise in long-form book design, 4-color production, and Adobe Creative Cloud will directly shape the quality and presentation of finished books.
This remote position is ideal for a highly organized, creative professional who combines an eye for detail with strong production and project management skills.
An online portfolio demonstrating relevant book interior design and typesetting work is required for consideration.

Accountabilities
  • Design and typeset approximately 12–20 book projects simultaneously, managing work according to publishing schedules and production deadlines.
  • Collaborate with editorial, production, and art direction teams to develop book interiors from initial design concepts through typesetting, proofreading, revisions, and final delivery.
  • Create sophisticated long-form layouts for lifestyle, cookbook, children’s, gift, specialty, and nonfiction publications, including complex 4-color projects.
  • Translate written or verbal creative direction into visually compelling, functional, and production-ready book interiors.
  • Take ownership of projects by proactively identifying design or production challenges, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring consistent follow-through.
  • Manage project timelines, communicate progress, prioritize competing assignments, and maintain accurate production documentation.
  • Manipulate, retouch, and color-correct photographs and illustrations while creating graphs, charts, and other visual elements when required.
  • Perform prepress activities and prepare accurate, high-quality print-ready PDFs for production and printing partners.
  • Gather, organize, and archive project assets and documentation according to established procedures.
  • Repurpose existing content and implement reprint corrections while maintaining consistency and production quality.
  • Stay informed about current book design, typography, publishing, printing, and trade book trends to bring relevant creative perspectives to each project.
Requirements
  • Minimum of 7 years of professional experience designing and typesetting book interiors, preferably within publishing or another high-volume production environment.
  • Demonstrated professional experience designing and laying out long-form book interiors is required, with substantial 4-color production experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Design or a related field, particularly with an emphasis on interior book design and typography.
  • Expert-level Macintosh skills and advanced proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of long-document production in Adobe InDesign, including paragraph, character, object, and GREP styles; experience with Master Pages is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of typography, book structural elements, proofreading marks, printing, binding, and prepress processes.
  • Strong knowledge of current trade book design trends and an understanding of how design choices translate into successful finished products.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel and the ability to work effectively with files and content originating from different sources.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage numerous concurrent projects and prioritize effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to brainstorm ideas, interpret direction, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, combined with a proactive approach to troubleshooting and project execution.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a collaborative creative team.
  • Comfortable working quickly and accurately in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high standard of quality.
  • A strong creative vision, flexibility, attention to detail, and genuine enthusiasm for typography and books.
  • An online portfolio showcasing relevant book interior design and typesetting work is required.
Benefits
  • Salary: $56,000–$70,000 annually, with compensation determined based on experience, industry knowledge, technical and communication skills, and other relevant factors.
  • Comprehensive benefits package designed to support physical health, retirement and savings, caregiving, emotional wellbeing, transportation, and other areas of employee wellbeing.
  • Flexible elective benefits that allow employees to select options aligned with their individual needs and circumstances.
  • Full-time remote work opportunity within the United States.
  • Opportunity to contribute to meaningful publishing projects and visually impactful books.
  • Collaborative environment working alongside experienced editorial, production, art, and creative professionals.
  • Reasonable accommodations available for qualified individuals with disabilities throughout the application and interview process.
