Purpose: The Deputy Director of Integrated Organizing Communications provides strategic and practical leadership across SEIUs organizing and union strength priorities. This role oversees communications and digital management and strategy for national campaigns, and leads a team of skilled communications and digital practitioners to execute vibrant, cohesive, worker-centered campaigns. This Deputy provides high-level leadership and thought partnership on the Worker Power team, and manages a team of at least three (3) direct reports.
This is a key role on the leadership team in the Narrative and Engagement department operating on the Worker Power team. This team serves as the dedicated integrated communications and digital media engine for the union's core growth and campaign efforts, specifically supporting the Organizing Hub and Union Strength initiatives. The team's primary function is to inform and translate the union's strategic organizing goals into actionable, amplified, and cohesive communications plans and campaigns.
Primary Responsibilities: (Any one position may not include all of the specific duties and responsibilities listed. Performs a wide range of duties as assigned by the International Union, including some or all of the following:
- Campaign Strategy: Lead the development and execution of vibrant and cohesive worker-centered communications and digital strategy, building capacity across our priority campaigns to build a multiracial movement of workers. From narrative and messaging coordination to creating dynamic days of action, this role will collaborate across the Narrative and Engagement Department and Organizing Hub.
- Lead a Strong Team: Work closely with the Director of Organizing Narrative and Engagement, the Deputy Director of Digital Organizing, and other staff as required to build out and oversee the unions organizing campaigns. This includes day-to-day management of organizing Assistant Directors or other staff assigned to campaigns. This Deputy provides consistent leadership and models good judgment as a key member of the Organizing Narrative team. Supervise the work of consultants, if applicable.
- Collaborate to Build Campaigns: Work directly with Organizing Hub deputies and campaign staff to create and share communications strategy, messaging, and materials, to drive engagement of workers and other stakeholders, and to build awareness of SEIUs organizing demands. As part of the senior leadership team in the communications department, work with colleagues to coordinate strategic communications plans and goals, to tell one, cohesive story.
- This position is responsible for clear and effective planning, budgeting, and project management, and coordinates with divisions, departments, and campaign leaders.
- As an effective manager, prioritizes the growth and development of staff that may report to this position, including training, feedback, reviews, skills, and career development.
- Act and organize time with independence. This position will work with International Union staff, campaign staff, local leaders and members, nonunion workers, and community partners in order to implement and execute the communications strategy. This position must be able to represent the International Union with independent judgment and a high level of professionalism.
- Handle multiple priority projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines.
- Model consistent leadership, intentional teamwork, and a desire to develop and grow as a campaigner.
- Performs other duties as assigned in support of the work of the International union.
- Must be available for frequent travel with overnight stays required. Long and irregular hours.
Qualifications & Experience: Seven to eight years of related work experience or a combination of education and experience that would provide for the knowledge, skills, and abilities as laid out above. Knowledge of unions and other advocacy organizations preferred. Priority given to candidates with real-world communications and organizing experience, regardless of formal education.
Physical Requirements: Work is generally performed in an office setting, but this job may require work in the field or in other settings to perform the tasks required to complete assignments. Must be available for frequent travel with overnight stays. Long and irregular hours.
