Job Description
- A bryophyte and lichen field technician is needed to collaborate with a grant-funded research project examining bryophyte and lichen communities at the Altona Flat Rock in Altona, New York.
- Primary responsibilities include conducting plot-based surveys of bryophytes, lichens, and vascular plants; estimating abundance, positively identifying organisms to species, recording associated microhabitat and vegetation data; and assisting with specimen collection and curation as needed.
- Basic tree and shrub identification skills are required for complete habitat characterization.
- Applications should have prior experience in fieldwork, the ability to identify common and rare bryophytes and lichens, comfort using hand lenses, field keys, GPS units, experience with soil sample collection, and standardized data collection.
- Work will involve both independent surveys and small-team collaboration.
- The position will begin in June 2026 with fieldwork. Data entry and analysis will follow once field surveys are completed. Early mornings and physically demanding field conditions should be expected.
Qualifications
- Experience conducting biodiversity surveys in shrublands and forests
- Ability to identify bryophytes, lichens, biological soil crusts, and vascular plants of the northeastern USNY
- Ability to navigate through the woods alone and over rough terrain
- Access to a car for transportation to the sites
- Basic experience with Excel / Google Sheets
