Director of Import Compliance

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director of Import Compliance based in the United States.

This senior leadership role is responsible for shaping and executing global import compliance strategy across complex, multi-regional supply chains. The position plays a critical role in ensuring adherence to U.S. Customs and international trade regulations while enabling business continuity and operational efficiency. You will lead import compliance governance, classification frameworks, tariff mitigation strategies, and regulatory readiness across a diverse product portfolio. The role requires strong cross-functional influence, working closely with supply chain, legal, finance, and operations teams to proactively manage risk and ensure compliance excellence. As a key leader, you will also oversee audits, policy development, and continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen global trade operations. Accountabilities:
  • Lead and evolve the global import compliance strategy, ensuring alignment with U.S. Customs regulations and international trade requirements.
  • Oversee import classification, country of origin determinations, valuation processes, and customs documentation accuracy across global operations.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve import compliance policies, procedures, and governance frameworks.
  • Manage and guide compliance teams responsible for audits, risk assessments, and corrective action plans.
  • Partner with supply chain, procurement, and business units to identify and mitigate tariff, regulatory, and trade-related risks.
  • Monitor changes in global trade regulations and ensure timely communication and organizational readiness.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives to resolve complex import compliance issues and strengthen operational controls.
  • Provide expert guidance to internal stakeholders on import regulations, compliance standards, and best practices.
Requirements

This role requires an experienced trade compliance leader with deep expertise in import regulations, strong operational judgment, and proven ability to lead global teams in complex environments. Candidates should bring a strong balance of technical regulatory knowledge and strategic leadership capability.

  • 15+ years of experience in trade compliance, with at least 10+ years specializing in import compliance.
  • 5+ years of senior leadership experience managing globally distributed teams.
  • Strong expertise in U.S. Customs regulations, tariffs, USMCA, classification, valuation, and import documentation.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute enterprise-level compliance strategies in complex supply chain environments.
  • Strong cross-functional leadership and influence skills across business, legal, supply chain, and operational teams.
  • Experience conducting audits, risk assessments, and implementing corrective action frameworks.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into actionable guidance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience.
  • Customs Broker License or government/regulated industry experience is a plus.
