Business Engineer
Position Summary
The Business Engineer serves as an internal consultant responsible for improving organizational effectiveness through the application of industrial engineering, operations management, and performance improvement principles. This position partners with clinical, operational, and administrative leaders to evaluate workflows, optimize resource utilization, improve patient access and throughput, enhance financial performance, and support strategic initiatives across physician practices and ambulatory services.

The Business Engineer utilizes data analysis, process mapping, benchmarking, Lean methodologies, and systems thinking to identify opportunities for operational improvement and implement sustainable solutions that enhance quality, efficiency, and the patient experience.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1 Operational Improvement
-Evaluate current operational workflows through observation, process mapping, interviews, and data analysis.
-Identify operational inefficiencies, bottlenecks, redundancies, and opportunities to improve productivity and patient flow.
-Design and implement evidence-based workflow improvements that improve efficiency while maintaining high-quality patient care.
-Develop current-state and future-state workflow diagrams, standard work, and process documentation.
-Lead or facilitate Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, and other continuous improvement initiatives.
2 Capacity and Productivity Analysis
-Perform staffing assessments, workload analyses, productivity evaluations, and capacity planning.
-Analyze provider schedules, appointment templates, patient access, and clinic utilization to maximize efficiency.
-Conduct time-motion studies and evaluate resource utilization to support staffing recommendations.
-Develop recommendations to improve provider productivity, reduce patient wait times, and optimize clinic operations.
3 Data Analysis and Performance Measurement
-Analyze operational, financial, and clinical performance data to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
-Develop dashboards, scorecards, and performance metrics to monitor operational performance.
-Benchmark organizational performance against industry standards and best practices.
-Measure outcomes of improvement initiatives and recommend additional enhancements as needed.
4 Project Management
-Lead cross-functional operational improvement projects from assessment through implementation.
-Facilitate multidisciplinary meetings to build consensus and drive change.
-Develop project plans, timelines, executive summaries, and formal recommendations.
-Support implementation of new programs, technologies, and operational initiatives through workflow redesign and change management.
5 Collaboration
-Partner with physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, nursing leadership, practice managers, revenue cycle, scheduling, IT, finance, and administrative departments.
-Promote standardization of operational processes across physician practices while recognizing specialty-specific needs.
-Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership regarding operational performance and process improvement opportunities.

Minimum Education Requirements

Required Bachelor's Degree Industrial Engineering, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Operations Management, Systems Engineering, or a related field required.
Preferred Master's Degree Industrial Engineering, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration (MBA), or related field preferred.

Minimum Years of Experience

Required Minimum five (5) years of experience in healthcare operations, management engineering, industrial engineering, operational excellence, performance improvement, or healthcare consulting.
Experience within physician practices, ambulatory care, or hospital operations strongly preferred.
Preferred Demonstrated success leading process improvement initiatives with measurable operational and financial outcomes.
Experience facilitating organizational change and multidisciplinary improvement efforts.

License, Registry or Certification

Required
Preferred Preferred Certifications
Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt
Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ)
Project Management Professional (PMP)
Lean Healthcare Certification

Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
-Knowledge of industrial engineering principles and healthcare operations.
-Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills.
-Experience with workflow analysis, process mapping, and value stream mapping.
-Knowledge of productivity measurement, labor analysis, capacity planning, and staffing methodologies.
-Familiarity with physician practice operations, patient access, scheduling, and revenue cycle processes.
-Ability to interpret complex operational and financial data.
-Strong facilitation, presentation, and communication skills.
-Excellent organizational and project management abilities.
-Ability to influence change without direct supervisory authority.
-Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
Preferred -Experience with Visio, Lucidchart, Power BI, Tableau, or similar analytics and workflow software preferred.
