Professor of Practice - Literacy Coordinator
The University of New Mexico's College of Education and Human Sciences (COEHS) invites applications for a full-time Professor of Practice - Literacy Coordinator position beginning Fall 2026. This position is supported through the New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED) and will play a leadership role in supporting the implementation of culturally and linguistically sustaining practices, structured literacy and science of reading initiatives across educator preparation programs.
The Literacy Coordinator will collaborate with and support faculty, staff, school district partners, and state agencies to strengthen literacy preparation, support curriculum alignment, facilitate literacy-focused clinical experiences, assist with assessment and reporting activities, and advance continuous improvement efforts across teacher preparation programs.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will serveas the College's Literacy Coordinator and provide leadership forliteracy-related initiatives across educator preparation programs.Responsibilities include collaborating with faculty and external partners tosupport implementation of structured literacy requirements; supportingcurriculum alignment and program improvement efforts; assisting withliteracy-focused clinical experiences; coordinating assessment, reporting, andcontinuous improvement activities; participating in state and institutionalliteracy initiatives; and serving as a resource for evidence-based literacyinstruction and science of reading implementation. The position will workclosely with faculty in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, andSpecial Education and will support collaboration between the UNM Albuquerquecampus and UNM-Gallup.

1. Doctorate in Education, Literacy, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, Special Education, or a related field.
2. Experience working in teacher preparation programs or higher education settings.
3. LETRS certification, structured literacy credential, or comparable professional training.
4. Experience supporting faculty, advocacy, curriculum review, program improvement, or accreditation activities.
5. Experience working across multiple educational agencies or institutions.
6. Experience using candidate performance data to support program improvement and decision-making.
7. Experience coordinating professional development or faculty learning initiatives.
8. Knowledge of New Mexico educator preparation programs and educational systems.
9. Demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
10. Demonstrated commitment to cultivating and understanding use of culturally and linguistically sustaining literacy practices
11. Demonstrated knowledge of the science of reading and structured literacy practices.
12. Experience collaborating with educators, schools, districts, or higher education faculty
