Summary

The Field Service Technician II is an experienced field technician responsible for performing industrial field services including mechanical bolting, heat treating, and field machining at customer locations. This position requires demonstrated hands-on experience in heat treating and field machining and the ability to independently perform routine field assignments with limited supervision. The Field Service Technician II sets up, operates, troubleshoots, and maintains field service equipment while ensuring work is completed safely, accurately, and in accordance with company procedures, customer requirements, and applicable specifications. This position supports maintenance, turnaround, repair, and project activities within refining, chemical, petrochemical, midstream, power generation, and other industrial facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant industrial field service, mechanical maintenance, construction, turnaround, or similar experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience performing industrial heat treating and field machining.
  • Experience with mechanical bolting and torque/tensioning applications preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to set up and operate field service tools and equipment with limited supervision.
  • Experience working in refining, chemical, petrochemical, midstream, power generation, or similar industrial environments preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Current TWIC card or ability to obtain.
  • Ability to pass required medical examination, drug and alcohol screening, respirator qualification/fit testing, background screening, and customer-specific requirements.
  • Ability to travel extensively based on project and customer requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of industrial heat-treating methods, equipment, controls, and applications.
  • Working knowledge of field machining equipment, setup, operation, and applications.
  • Knowledge of mechanical bolting, torque, and tensioning equipment and practices.
  • Ability to set up, operate, inspect, and maintain field service equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic drawings, specifications, procedures, equipment manuals, and job instructions.
  • Ability to take and verify measurements required for field machining applications.
  • Ability to monitor heat-treating equipment and process parameters and identify abnormal operating conditions.
  • Ability to troubleshoot routine equipment and application issues and determine appropriate corrective action.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to accurately complete service reports, equipment records, and customer-required documentation.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision while effectively supporting a field service team.
  • Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces when required.
  • Strong safety awareness and ability to recognize and report unsafe conditions.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing assignments, schedules, and customer requirements.
  • Professional communication skills when interacting with customers, supervisors, and coworkers.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy, dependability, and accountability.

Essential Functions

  • Perform onsite heat treating, field machining, and mechanical bolting services at customer locations.
  • Independently perform routine heat-treating and field-machining assignments within demonstrated competency and established procedures.
  • Set up, operate, monitor, and shut down heat-treating equipment in accordance with job requirements and established procedures.
  • Set up and operate field machining equipment for assigned applications.
  • Verify equipment setup, measurements, operating conditions, and job requirements before beginning work.
  • Operate torque, tensioning, bolting, machining, heat-treating, and other specialty field equipment.
  • Monitor equipment during operation and identify conditions requiring adjustment, troubleshooting, or escalation.
  • Troubleshoot routine field equipment problems and assist with determining appropriate repair or service methods.
  • Inspect field tools and equipment before and after use and report damaged or defective equipment.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on company tools, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Complete required service reports, heat-treating records, machining documentation, equipment records, and customer paperwork accurately and timely.
  • Follow job-specific procedures, drawings, specifications, quality requirements, and customer instructions.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Communicate job status, equipment issues, safety concerns, and changes in work scope to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Interface professionally with customers and other contractors at customer facilities.
  • Assist and provide task-level guidance to less-experienced technicians when directed.
  • Follow all company, OSHA, customer, and site-specific safety requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Physical Demands

Ability to regularly stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, and move throughout active industrial facilities, customer job sites, and shop environments.

  • Ability to walk and work on uneven terrain, gravel, concrete, grating, scaffolding access areas, and other industrial surfaces.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and other approved access structures as required to reach work areas and equipment.
  • Ability to work at various elevations, including elevated work areas, and in confined or restricted spaces as required.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including respiratory protection when required, for extended periods.
  • Ability to visually inspect, set up, operate, and monitor heat-treating, field-machining, bolting, and other specialty equipment and tooling.
  • Ability to use hands and arms to operate hand tools, power tools, controls, measuring devices, and other field-service equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and recognize audible warnings in environments with moderate to elevated noise levels.
  • Ability to frequently lift and carry materials, tools, and equipment weighing 5–25 pounds and occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 75 pounds, with assistance or mechanical lifting devices when appropriate.
  • Ability to perform work requiring manual dexterity, coordination, and precise positioning or adjustment of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors and in industrial environments for extended periods under varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to work extended shifts and schedules, including overtime, nights, weekends, and turnaround schedules, as required by operational and customer needs

Work Environment

This position primarily operates at industrial customer facilities, including refineries, chemical and petrochemical plants, power generation facilities, and other heavy industrial environments. Work may also be performed in company shop and warehouse environments. The employee may be exposed to extreme temperatures, variable weather conditions, high noise levels, heavy machinery, moving equipment, elevated work areas, confined spaces, dust, fumes, and other conditions commonly associated with industrial facilities. Work schedules may include extended hours, overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, and turnaround schedules. Extensive travel and short-notice assignments may be required. Appropriate PPE and strict compliance with company, OSHA, customer, and site-specific safety requirements are required at all times.
