This position plays an important role in supporting our fiberglass boat manufacturing operation by keeping specialized production equipment operating safely, reliably, and efficiently.

The Lamination Equipment Mechanic will be responsible for troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, and servicing equipment used in fiberglass and composite manufacturing, including chop guns, gelcoat spray equipment, resin delivery systems, catalyst systems, pumps, and pneumatic components.

We're looking for someone who enjoys working with their hands, solving mechanical problems, and taking ownership of equipment performance. The ideal candidate has previous industrial maintenance or mechanical repair experience and understands how to diagnose equipment failures, perform preventive maintenance, and minimize production downtime.

Previous experience with fiberglass chop guns or gelcoat equipment is highly preferred, but we are also interested in experienced industrial mechanics who have strong mechanical, pneumatic, and fluid-system troubleshooting skills.

What You'll Do

Lamination Equipment Maintenance & Repair

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair fiberglass chop guns, gelcoat spray guns, resin application equipment, and related manufacturing systems.
  • Diagnose mechanical and operational issues involving resin flow, catalyst delivery, spray patterns, material ratios, pressure, and equipment performance.
  • Maintain and repair equipment such as Magnum Venus Products (MVP), Glas-Craft, and similar fiberglass application systems.
  • Repair and replace pumps, seals, valves, hoses, fittings, regulators, spray tips, and other mechanical components.
  • Troubleshoot pneumatic systems, air motors, pressure regulators, and fluid delivery equipment.
  • Inspect and maintain catalyst pumps and delivery systems to support accurate and consistent operation.
  • Perform equipment rebuilds and replace worn or damaged components.
  • Identify the root causes of recurring equipment problems and recommend corrective actions.
  • Verify equipment is operating properly and safely before returning it to production.

Preventive Maintenance & Equipment Reliability

  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on lamination and fiberglass application equipment.
  • Complete daily, weekly, and monthly equipment inspections and maintenance activities.
  • Identify worn, damaged, or failing components before they result in equipment breakdowns.
  • Clean, lubricate, adjust, and maintain equipment according to manufacturer recommendations.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment repairs, maintenance activities, and recurring issues.
  • Assist with developing and improving preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Recommend improvements that increase equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and extend equipment life.
  • Help maintain an organized inventory of commonly used spare parts and replacement components.

Production Support & Troubleshooting

  • Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and production-related maintenance requests.
  • Work directly with Lamination Supervisors and production employees to identify equipment problems.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues efficiently to minimize interruptions to manufacturing operations.
  • Support production startup by verifying equipment readiness and proper operation.
  • Assist production employees with proper equipment operation, cleaning, and basic daily maintenance.
  • Communicate equipment concerns, repair progress, and expected downtime to Maintenance and Production leadership.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce material waste, improve application consistency, and support product quality.
  • Coordinate repairs and maintenance activities around production priorities whenever possible.

Safety & Equipment Compliance

  • Follow all company Environmental, Health & Safety procedures and established maintenance practices.
  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures when servicing or repairing equipment.
  • Safely maintain equipment used with resins, catalysts, solvents, and other fiberglass manufacturing materials.
  • Follow applicable safety procedures when working around MEKP catalysts and chemical delivery systems.
  • Inspect equipment for leaks, damaged hoses, pressure concerns, and other potential hazards.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained according to manufacturer specifications and applicable safety requirements.
  • Properly use required personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection when necessary.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe maintenance work area.
  • Immediately communicate unsafe equipment conditions or workplace hazards.

General Maintenance & Continuous Improvement

  • Assist the Maintenance Department with additional mechanical repairs and plant maintenance activities as needed.
  • Support equipment installation, relocation, setup, and commissioning.
  • Maintain tools, repair equipment, and maintenance supplies in good working condition.
  • Document recurring equipment failures and communicate recommended solutions.
  • Participate in continuous-improvement efforts focused on equipment reliability, productivity, quality, and cost reduction.
  • Work collaboratively with Maintenance, Production, Operations, and other departments to support manufacturing goals.
Requirements:
  • Previous hands-on experience maintaining, troubleshooting, or repairing industrial equipment, production machinery, or mechanical systems.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to diagnose equipment problems.
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, or fluid delivery systems.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, diagrams, technical documentation, and manufacturer instructions.
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and mechanical repairs.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify the causes of equipment failures.
  • Ability to work independently and respond efficiently to production equipment issues.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to equipment reliability and workplace safety.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with maintenance personnel, production employees, and supervisors.
  • Willingness to learn specialized fiberglass and lamination equipment.
  • Ability to work full-time on-site in Chocowinity, North Carolina.
  • Willingness to work overtime or adjust working hours when necessary to support production needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience maintaining or repairing fiberglass chop guns, gelcoat spray guns, or resin application equipment.
  • Experience with Magnum Venus Products (MVP), Glas-Craft, or similar fiberglass spray systems.
  • Experience working in fiberglass boat manufacturing, composites manufacturing, or another production environment using resin application equipment.
  • Knowledge of resin-to-catalyst ratios, catalyst delivery systems, and fiberglass application processes.
  • Experience rebuilding pumps, spray guns, pneumatic equipment, and fluid delivery systems.
  • Familiarity with industrial preventive maintenance programs and maintenance work order systems.
  • Experience maintaining manufacturing equipment involving chemicals, compressed air, pumps, valves, and pressure systems.
  • Previous experience in marine, automotive, RV, powersports, or other manufacturing environments.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who takes pride in keeping equipment running.

The right candidate should be comfortable diagnosing a mechanical issue, disassembling and rebuilding equipment, replacing worn components, troubleshooting pressure or material-flow problems, and getting production equipment back into service safely.

This person should be:

  • Mechanically inclined and comfortable working with specialized production equipment.
  • Proactive about identifying potential equipment failures before they happen.
  • Able to troubleshoot problems rather than simply replacing parts.
  • Organized and consistent with preventive maintenance and repair documentation.
  • Comfortable working directly with production employees to understand equipment concerns.
  • Focused on safety, equipment reliability, and minimizing production downtime.
  • Willing to learn and develop expertise in fiberglass and lamination equipment.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is a hands-on maintenance position working in an active fiberglass boat manufacturing facility.

  • Work is performed primarily within production, maintenance, and manufacturing areas.
  • Regular exposure to manufacturing noise, fiberglass materials, dust, chemical odors, and varying temperatures.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and work in various positions throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to safely work around production machinery, compressed-air systems, and material-handling equipment.
