Position Summary

Grimes S&C Tax Advisors is seeking an accomplished Tax Director to serve as a senior leader within our tax practice. This individual will remain hands-on with important and complex client work while providing final technical oversight, leading major client relationships, developing business, and helping guide the continued growth of Grimes S&C Tax Advisors.

The Tax Director will be expected to provide final review and signing oversight within the scope of their professional credentials and firm authorization. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with strong client leadership and business development capability and may bring or manage an established book of business.

Because S&C is a small, collaborative practice, the Tax Director will remain actively involved in tax preparation, planning, and client service rather than operating solely in a leadership capacity.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as a senior technical and client leader for the tax practice while remaining hands-on with complex tax preparation and planning work.
• Perform final review and sign federal and state tax returns and filings within the scope of professional credentials, firm authorization, and applicable requirements.
• Lead major and complex client relationships, providing sophisticated tax planning, advisory services, and practical recommendations.
• Oversee complex engagements and significant tax matters, including notices, audits, inquiries, and correspondence with taxing authorities.
• Provide technical leadership and guidance on complex federal, state, and local tax issues and developments.
• Mentor and develop Tax Managers, Senior Tax Managers, Senior Tax Accountants, and Tax Accountants and help maintain high standards of quality and client service.
• Develop new business, deepen existing client relationships, identify opportunities for expanded services, and contribute to the growth and strategic direction of the tax practice.
• Bring, transition, or manage a book of business when applicable and support the successful integration and retention of those client relationships.
• Collaborate closely with Grimes & Company Wealth Management to identify integrated tax, planning, and wealth management opportunities, strengthen processes, protect confidential information, and support the broader needs of the firm.

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; advanced degree in Taxation or related field preferred.
• 15+ years of progressive tax experience with substantial responsibility for complex tax preparation, review, planning, and client advisory services.
• CPA certification required; active PTIN and ability to act as an authorized signer required for applicable federal tax returns.
• Deep knowledge of federal and state tax laws and regulations and demonstrated ability to resolve highly complex tax matters.
• Extensive experience leading significant client relationships and providing strategic tax planning and advisory services.
• Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and practice-management capability in a hands-on tax environment.
• Strong business development record; experience building, managing, or transitioning a book of business strongly preferred.
• Excellent judgment, communication, analytical, relationship-management, and organizational skills.
• Experience with CCH Axcess and QuickBooks required; advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.

Salary Range:

$185,000 - $225,000+
