Job Description

THE OPPORTUNITY
In this position, you’ll join a highly experienced team of professionals who have been in the tree care industry for more than 45 years, Professional Tree Care Co. (see professional tree care dot com and green waste recycle yard dot com).
As our Maintenance Mechanic & Driver, you’ll be the person who performance routine maintenance (such as oil, spark plug, filters, wiper blade changes, etc.) on a wide variety of passenger trucks, commercial trucks, and eventually heavy equipment. You’ll also serve as the primary person who drives throughout the greater Bay Area picking up and dropping off parts for our huge fleet of vehicles and machines; the same trucks, cranes, and heavy equipment used to trim and safely take down enormous trees from Mendocino to Monterey and Sacramento to San Francisco.
Reporting to our Fleet Supervisor and working alongside experienced mechanics on the Fleet team, your first priority will be to serve as parts driver, which will take +/-50% of your time. Once parts runs are completed daily, you’ll be trained and then tasked with performing maintenance with increased responsibilities as you successfully master each type of task and/or vehicle type.
The person who fills this role will have a current California Driver’s License and a clean driving record, meaning no moving violations (tickets), accidents, or points for the past five years. She/They/He will have a minimum of seven years on the road since this is a requirement of the job. The winning candidate will be someone whose long-term career goal is to serve as a full-time mechanic for our company.

WHY YOU’RE SUCH A GREAT FIT FOR THIS ROLE
- You like to drive. You’re a safe driver with a clean driving record, clean CA Class C Driver’s license, and acknowledge that your work vehicle may/will be tracked throughout the day. You also have a minimum of seven years behind the wheel, which is a requirement of the role.
- You’re a gearhead! You’re naturally mechanically inclined, love all things related to cars, trucks, and heavy equipment, AND you want to earn while you learn
- You have one or more years of hands-on experience, or a combination of high school training or trade school and hands-on experience. OR, you have worked on your own car or that of your family/friends for several years.
- You’re authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
- You have a high school diploma or G.E.D. Please list all coursework and completion dates on your resume
- You’re physically able to lift at least 30 pounds regularly to load/unload and deliver parts, can climb under and onto large vehicles and equipment.
- Your career goal is to become a full-time mechanic
Bonus points for:
- Having several years’ experience working as a lube technician, junior mechanic, driver, or anything related to the responsibilities of this position
- Being bilingual English/Spanish. This is not required but a huge plus since you’ll be working with folks whose first language is Spanish.
- Being computer savvy since you’ll enter part numbers and inventory info. into a database. Also not required but would be awesome.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Serve as our primary parts driver. Drive a company vehicle throughout the greater Bay Area to pick up/deliver parts, special orders, and whatever is needed by the Fleet team
- Deliver and pick up vehicles needing service
- Perform preventative service maintenance, diagnoses and repairs on autos, light trucks, large trucks, and a variety of equipment related to the tree care industry
- Check and change car fluids, filters, windshield wipers, and parts as needed. Check tire pressure, change brake pads, rotors, sensor, etc.
- Perform standard inspections and tests
- Update our Tatem’s database online to meet compliance and regulations standards; enter inventory.
- Clean and organize each location's work area when not driving or working on a mechanical project
- Once trained, utilize hand tools and diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot mechanical issues
- Making suggestions that will increase the team’s efficiency and/or save money
- Other projects as time allows
COMPENSATION AND FURTHER DETAILS
This is a full-time/permanent position that comes with medical, dental, and optical insurance paid at fifty percent (50%) after 90 days of employment.
Since this is a learning opportunity for someone seeking on-the-job training to become a mechanic, the person who is accepts this role must be thoroughly satisfied with a starting hourly rate of $19.50 to $24.00 per hour based on your experience, match to the position, and proximity to our yard in Richmond, CA.
