Position Title: Microsoft Azure Site Reliability Engineer (SRE)
Department: Engineering
Reports To: Senior Executive Vice President of Engineering
Location: Remote, United States
Travel: Less than 10 percent
Direct Reports: None
Position Summary
National Quality Systems (NQS) is a healthcare SaaS company delivering cloud-based clinical registry, quality improvement, interoperability, analytics, and revenue optimization solutions to hospitals and health systems. The NQS platform is built on Microsoft Azure, Azure Kubernetes Service, PostgreSQL, Python and Django, and modern cloud-native technologies, and supports mission-critical healthcare workloads that require exceptional reliability, security, and scalability.
The Microsoft Azure Site Reliability Engineer is responsible for the deployment, operation, reliability, security, and continuous improvement of the NQS cloud platform. The position owns infrastructure as code, customer environment provisioning, CI/CD pipeline integrity, production monitoring, and incident response, and operates the platform in a manner that satisfies HIPAA, SOC 2 Type II, and HITRUST control requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Cloud Infrastructure and Platform Operations
• Deploy, configure, and maintain Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure supporting production, staging, and development environments.
• Deploy, scale, upgrade, and support Azure Kubernetes Service clusters, including node pool management, workload scheduling, and cluster networking.
• Install and configure customer SaaS environments, including tenant provisioning, environment validation, and handoff to implementation and support teams.
• Administer Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server, including configuration, performance tuning, backup and restore, high availability, and disaster recovery testing.
• Maintain platform capacity, performance, and cost efficiency, and recommend infrastructure changes that improve reliability or reduce spend.
Automation and Infrastructure as Code
• Develop, maintain, and version Terraform modules and infrastructure as code covering all NQS Azure resources.
• Maintain GitHub repositories, branching standards, and GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines used to build, test, and deploy platform components.
• Automate manual operational tasks, environment builds, and routine maintenance to reduce human error and deployment time.
• Maintain deployment and rollback procedures that allow releases to be executed and reversed predictably.
Reliability, Monitoring, and Incident Response
• Monitor production environments and respond to incidents, alerts, and service degradation.
• Participate in a rotating on-call schedule and provide after-hours, weekend, and holiday incident response as scheduled.
• Perform root cause analysis on production incidents, document findings, and implement corrective actions that prevent recurrence.
• Define, instrument, and report service level indicators and service level objectives for platform availability and performance.
• Support engineering, implementation, and customer support teams during production issues, and communicate status and resolution to internal stakeholders.
Security and Compliance
• Manage Azure Key Vault secrets, certificates, and credential rotation in accordance with NQS security policy.
• Administer identity and access management, role-based access control, and least-privilege access across Azure resources.
• Operate and evidence infrastructure controls supporting HIPAA, SOC 2 Type II, and HITRUST, including logging, monitoring, change management, and access review.
• Support internal and external audits by producing infrastructure evidence, configuration records, and control documentation on request.
• Apply security patching, vulnerability remediation, and configuration hardening on a defined schedule.
Documentation and General
• Develop and maintain operational documentation, runbooks, architecture diagrams, and disaster recovery procedures.
• Provide clear, timely, and structured reporting to the Senior Executive Vice President of Engineering on platform health, incident trends, and remediation status.
• Operate in accordance with NQS policies, HIPAA, and customer confidentiality obligations, and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience. Master's degree preferred.
• Five or more years supporting production cloud infrastructure.
• Three or more years administering Microsoft Azure.
• Three or more years managing Kubernetes clusters in production.
• Hands-on experience with Azure Kubernetes Service, Terraform, PostgreSQL, Docker, GitHub, and GitHub Actions.
• Strong Linux administration and scripting experience in Bash, PowerShell, or Python.
• Demonstrated experience troubleshooting distributed applications, container workloads, and cloud networking.
• Demonstrated experience participating in an on-call rotation and resolving production incidents under time pressure.
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
• Microsoft Azure certifications, including Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Solutions Architect Expert.
• Certified Kubernetes Administrator.
• Experience with Helm, Argo CD, Redis, Prometheus, Grafana, and NGINX Ingress.
• Experience operating healthcare SaaS platforms subject to HIPAA, SOC 2 Type II, or HITRUST requirements.
• Experience supporting audit and evidence collection for security and compliance frameworks.
• Experience with Python and Django application environments.
Core Competencies
• Operational Ownership. Takes responsibility for platform outcomes rather than assigned tasks, and drives issues to resolution without waiting for direction.
• Disciplined Execution. Follows change management, documentation, and security procedures consistently, including under incident pressure.
• Automation Mindset. Eliminates recurring manual work through code rather than repeating it.
• Clear Communication. Explains technical status, risk, and impact accurately to engineering, support, and executive audiences.

• Employees must comply with HIPAA, SOC 2, HITRUST, and all NQS information security and confidentiality policies when handling protected health information and confidential company information.
• Employment with NQS is at-will and may be terminated by either party at any time, with or without cause or notice, consistent with applicable law.
