  • JOB TITLE: Retail Pharmacy Manager

  • POSITION SUMMARY: The Retail Pharmacy Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, operations, and clinical oversight of the retail pharmacy located within the outpatient services surgery building. This role is a working Pharmacist and ensures the pharmacy delivers safe, efficient, patient-centered medication services while maintaining compliance with Washington State pharmacy regulations, organizational policies, and applicable regulatory and accreditation standards.

  • The Retail Pharmacy Manager leads pharmacy team members, oversees daily workflow and medication dispensing operations, manages inventory and controlled substances, and partners closely with physicians, surgeons, nurses, anesthesia providers, clinic staff, and other outpatient services to support continuity of care. The Manager is accountable for creating an exceptional pharmacy experience for patients and families while achieving operational, financial, quality, and service goals.

  • Oversee daily retail pharmacy operations, including prescription processing, dispensing, verification, medication counseling, inventory management, and customer service.

  • Ensure compliance with the Washington State Board of Pharmacy requirements, applicable federal regulations, and organizational policies and procedures.

  • Maintain appropriate controls for controlled substances, high-alert medications, and other regulated medications.

  • Monitor pharmacy quality, safety, productivity, service, and financial performance and implement improvement initiatives as needed.

  • Develop and maintain efficient workflows that support the unique needs of an outpatient surgery and procedural environment.

  • Ensure appropriate staffing, scheduling, training, and competency of pharmacy team members.

  • Oversee purchasing, inventory levels, medication availability, product selection, returns, recalls, and expired medication processes.

  • Support medication reconciliation, transitions of care, discharge prescriptions, and other initiatives that promote continuity of care when applicable.

  • Identify operational risks and promptly address medication safety concerns, patient complaints, workflow issues, and regulatory gaps.

  • Identify opportunities to improve pharmacy access, patient experience, workflow efficiency, technology utilization, and coordination with outpatient clinical services.

  • Use data, operational metrics, and team feedback to identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Partner with organizational leaders and clinical stakeholders to develop and implement new pharmacy services and processes.

  • Promote the appropriate use of technology and automation to improve medication safety and operational efficiency.

  • Adapt pharmacy operations to changing patient volumes, surgical schedules, organizational priorities, and business needs.

  • Deepen Connections: We build strong relationships with our patients, their families and partners in the communities we serve.

  • Create a welcoming, accessible, and patient-centered pharmacy experience.

  • Collaborate with surgeons, physicians, anesthesia teams, nurses, care coordinators, and other outpatient providers to support patient medication needs.

  • Facilitate effective communication regarding prescriptions, medication availability, insurance issues, prior authorizations, and other barriers to obtaining medications.

  • Coach team members to provide consistent, respectful, and compassionate service.

  • Build relationships with internal and external partners that support the pharmacy's success and the organization's overall patient-care mission.

  • QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Required Licensure:

  • Active Washington State Pharmacist License in good standing.

  • Ability to maintain all required licensure, registrations, certifications, and continuing education requirements.

  • Required Experience:

  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience as a Retail Pharmacist.

  • 3–5 years of pharmacy, retail, or healthcare leadership experience.

  • Proven track record of developing high-performing teams.

  • Experience with pharmacy operations, medication safety, inventory management, and regulatory compliance.

  • Experience working collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals preferred.

  • Compassionate, high-quality service that improves patient health and supports a positive patient experience.

  • Ability to effectively partner with providers and interdisciplinary clinical teams in an outpatient and surgical environment.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with active listening ability.

  • Skilled at resolving complex patient, operational, regulatory, and staff challenges.

  • Ability to understand and manage pharmacy performance, staffing, productivity, inventory, expenses, and other operational metrics.

  • Comfortable navigating changing business and patient care needs with accountability and flexibility.

  • Ability to learn and effectively use pharmacy systems, electronic health records, dispensing technology, and other applicable software.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Office, retail pharmacy, clinical, and outpatient healthcare settings with potential exposure to patient care and surgical areas.

  • Fast-paced environment requiring frequent interaction with patients, families, providers, clinical staff, and pharmacy team members.

  • Flexibility to work extended hours as needed based on pharmacy operations and patient volume.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends, and support multiple locations as needed.

  • May require work during periods of increased patient volume or operational demand.

  • Ability to complete all required training within designated timeframes.

  • Must comply with applicable infection prevention, safety, security, and personal protective equipment requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities.

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and perform repetitive hand and arm motions associated with pharmacy operations.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 lbs. as needed for medication, inventory, and pharmacy supplies.

  • Ability to frequently communicate with patients, families, providers, and team members in person, by telephone, and electronically.

  • Ability to use computers, pharmacy dispensing equipment, and other technology for extended periods.

Benefit Eligibility Requirements - Employees regularly scheduled at least 20 hours per week.
