Description:

The Intensive Reading Teacher is responsible for providing targeted literacy instruction to students in grades 9–12 who require additional support in reading comprehension, vocabulary development, fluency, and critical thinking skills. The teacher develops and implements differentiated instructional strategies aligned with state standards and school-wide academic goals to improve student literacy achievement and prepare students for graduation, post-secondary education, and career readiness.

The Intensive Reading Teacher fosters a structured, engaging, and data-driven learning environment that supports diverse learners and promotes academic growth. The shift for this role is Monday - Friday from 7:45 am - 4:00 pm.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan and deliver intensive reading instruction aligned to state standards and school curriculum requirements.
  • Utilize evidence-based literacy intervention strategies to support struggling readers.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the academic needs of students with varying reading levels and learning styles.
  • Teach reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, fluency, writing integration, and critical analysis skills.
  • Incorporate technology and instructional resources to enhance literacy development and student engagement.
  • Provide explicit instruction in test-taking strategies and academic literacy skills.
  • Administer diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments to monitor student progress.
  • Analyze student performance data to inform instruction and intervention planning.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of student achievement, attendance, and academic interventions.
  • Develop and implement intervention plans for students requiring additional academic support.
  • Establish and maintain a positive, safe, and academically focused classroom environment.
  • Implement classroom management practices that promote respect, accountability, and student success.
  • Build positive relationships with students to support motivation, engagement, and academic confidence.
  • Collaborate with counselors, ESE staff, ESOL staff, and other support personnel to address student needs.
  • Participate in professional learning communities, staff meetings, and school-wide initiatives.
  • Collaborate with instructional coaches and school leadership to improve literacy outcomes.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student progress and academic concerns.
  • Maintain compliance with school policies, state regulations, and professional standards.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development related to literacy instruction and adolescent learning.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Starting Salary: 63,055.00

  • 403B Deferred Compensation up to 6% Employer Match.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • School-based classroom environment.
  • May require participation in after-school activities, tutoring, testing support, or professional development sessions.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the classroom for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry instructional materials and classroom supplies up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to effectively supervise students in classroom and school settings.
Requirements:
  • An undergraduate degree in Education, English, Reading, Literacy, or related field required. (preferred)
  • ESOL endorsement (if applicable)
  • Current FLDOE certification or statement of Eligibility in the Grades 6-12 subject area
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions based on data and organizational goals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Experience working with personnel departments, particularly with government agencies, is preferred.
