JOB SUMMARY

The Clinical Coordinator is a Registered Nurse (RN) who provides frontline clinical leadership and oversight for ICU, Med Surg, and Outpatient Services. This role is accountable for facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to patient care, coordinating patient flow, staffing, and resource utilization, and supporting efficient daily operations across multiple care settings. The Clinical Coordinator serves as a clinical expert and problem-solver, promoting safe, timely, and patientcentered care across the continuum. Working in close partnership with department leadership, the Clinical Coordinator assists the Director with nursing leadership and management responsibilities, excluding the determination and execution of employee corrective action. The coordinator mentors and supports clinical staff, provides real-time guidance, and functions as a liaison among physicians, nursing staff, and administration to ensure clear communication and continuity of care. The Clinical Coordinator ensures adherence to clinical standards, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and organizational policies while supporting quality improvement initiatives and patient safety goals. The scope of responsibility includes direct patient care as needed, clinical and procedural support, coordination of care with providers and ancillary departments, and participation in departmental and hospital-wide operational and quality initiatives. This role requires flexibility to assume charge or leadership responsibilities as assigned, supporting consistent delivery of high-quality care across critical care, inpatient, and outpatient environments.

  • The Clinical Coordinator position is critical to the oversight for clinical care and coordination and is the first line of nursing leadership on a nursing unit. The Clinical Coordinator reports to the director of a department and is next in the chain of command in the absence of the department director. The Clinical Coordinator role models the mission, vision, and values of MHSC. As a part of nursing leadership at MHSC, the Clinical Coordinator complies with all relevant evidence-based practice policies, procedures, and guidelines as well as all relevant regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • The Clinical Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the delivery of patient care activities, professional education, and quality improvement activities, standards of care and practice, compliance with regulations and directs staff accordingly. The Clinical Coordinator has responsibility for patient care as determined by each unit’s staffing plan. The Clinical Coordinator assists with staff scheduling, shift assignments, and responds to immediate issues. The Clinical Coordinator attends meetings, facilitates new employee orientation on the patient care unit, participates in the hiring process, and assists in the performance evaluation process. Clinical Coordinators work collaboratively with members of the health team and other departments to resolve issues.

Role-Specific:

  • Provides direct patient care as needed in ICU, Med Surg, and Outpatient areas, including highacuity, intermediate, and ambulatory patient populations.
  • Performs initial and ongoing patient assessments, prioritization of care, and timely response to changes in patient condition, escalating care appropriately.
  • Supports efficient patient flow from admission through discharge, transfer, or transition to higher or lower levels of care.
  • Coordinates patient throughput and continuity of care in collaboration with providers, case management, ancillary departments, and external referral services.
  • Collaborates across inpatient and outpatient services to ensure seamless transitions of care and appropriate resource utilization.
  • Supports surge capacity, staffing adjustments, and patient placement decisions across ICU, Med Surg, and Outpatient Services.
  • Serves as a clinical resource for staff, supporting adherence to scopes of practice, standing protocols, and provider orders.
  • Demonstrates competency in clinical and procedural skills required to safely manage ICU, Med Surg, and Outpatient patients, including emergency escalation when required.
  • Assists with clinical procedures, rapid clinical decisionmaking, and stabilization of patients experiencing deterioration.
  • Routinely utilizes and oversees unitspecific equipment such as cardiac monitors, infusion devices, ventilators, emergency airway equipment, and pointofcare testing tools, as appropriate to each setting.
  • Assists in keeping payroll and timekeeping records accurate and up to date.
  • Works within Lippincott and PolicyStat to review, update, and maintain unit specific policies and procedures.
