Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the Water Treatment Plant Foreman/Chief Operator, the Water Operator I is responsible for work in the operation of state regulated facilities that have a direct effect on the health and well-being of the public. Water Operator I works and performs a variety of basic level tasks with close supervision and within established guidelines and procedures including routine maintenance and operation of facility equipment.
Education/Training/Experience Requirements:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Class “C” Water Certificate within 30 months of hire. Training provided.
3. Class “C” Texas driver’s license.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Operates and maintains treatment processes.
2. Operates heavy equipment.
3. Safely operates and assess all equipment and machinery in work area.
4. Learns to detect flaws in operations and equipment.
5. Carries on-call pager.
- Learns TCEQ Rules and Regulations applicable to a surface water treatment facility and the specific job functions.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
2. Ability to learn to perform routine test and measurements.
3. Ability to learn basic computer and record keeping skills.
4. Ability to operate lab equipment and run samples.
Physical Demands/Work Environment: Lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds; pulling, pushing or dragging up to 150 pounds of repair equipment and materials; climbing, crawling, kneeling, squatting, stooping and bending freely when participating in repairs; sitting, standing or walking for extended periods of time; working indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings and inclement weather; and some exposure to mechanical, electrical and explosive hazards dust, using proper safety precautions. May work in tight and enclosed areas. May be exposed to high noise levels.
Available for call back 24 hours a day for emergency and/or maintenance issues. Works a rotating weekend shift.
