JLT Trucking is seeking a safety-conscious Spotter responsible for guiding company drivers and vehicles while they operate on the runway and within designated airfield work areas at BWI Airport. The position helps drivers navigate assigned routes, maintain safe clearance from aircraft, equipment, personnel, and other vehicles, and follow all company, airport, and site-specific safety requirements. Because the position supports time-sensitive runway operations, the Spotter must be punctual, dependable, and capable of making sound decisions quickly and safely.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Safely guide drivers and JLT Trucking vehicles while traveling on the runway and within designated airfield work areas at BWI Airport.
- Use clear, consistent visual and verbal directions to assist drivers with safe vehicle positioning and movement.
- Maintain continuous awareness of aircraft, ground-support equipment, airport vehicles, personnel, and changing airfield conditions.
- Help drivers maintain safe clearance and remain within authorized routes and assigned work areas.
- Confirm assignments, routes, and destinations with Operations or the site supervisor before movement begins.
- Report to work on time and be fully prepared to begin assigned duties at the scheduled start of each shift.
- Immediately communicate hazards, obstructions, unsafe conditions, or changes that may affect safe vehicle movement.
- Communicate clearly and promptly with drivers, Operations, airport personnel, customers, and supervisors.
- Stop or redirect vehicle movement when conditions are unclear or unsafe and immediately report incidents, accidents, or near misses.
- Exercise sound judgment and make timely, safety-focused decisions when conditions change or immediate action is required.
- Coordinate driver movements to support safe and efficient airport operations and assigned work schedules.
- Wear required high-visibility clothing and other personal protective equipment while in designated airfield areas.
- Follow all JLT Trucking policies, BWI Airport requirements, site rules, training requirements, and authorized instructions.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Valid driver’s license required. Ability to satisfy applicable BWI Airport access, identification, security, and training requirements is required.
- Commercial driving, vehicle-spotting, transportation, airport, or other safety-sensitive work experience preferred.
- Ability to provide clear directions and safely guide commercial vehicles in active, restricted, and high-traffic work areas.
- Knowledge of safe vehicle movement, backing practices, hazard recognition, and traffic-control procedures.
- Ability to understand route assignments, written instructions, safety notices, maps, signs, and operational records.
- Strong communication, organization, attention to detail, and situational awareness.
- Excellent decision-making, problem-solving, and judgment capabilities, including the ability to respond calmly and appropriately to changing or unsafe conditions.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize assignments, and respond to changing operational needs.
- Consistent punctuality, dependability, and reliable attendance are essential requirements of the position.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, reach, and enter or exit equipment repeatedly throughout the shift.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Work is performed on or near active runway and designated airfield work areas around aircraft, commercial vehicles, ground-support equipment, personnel, noise, diesel exhaust, uneven surfaces, and weather extremes.
- Required high-visibility clothing and all other assigned personal protective equipment must be worn as directed.
