Central Valley Relief Veterinarian - Spay/Neuter (Contract) in California, Maryland at SAN FRANCISCO SPCA

Summary

We are seeking qualified veterinarians who want to contribute to the goals of the San Francisco SPCA by helping to fill open shifts with our Central Valley shelter partners in the San Joaquin, Fresno, Tulare, and Kings county areas. Interested professionals with proven surgical skills, a commitment to teamwork, a positive attitude for problem-solving and communication, and the desire to learn and grow should apply. We are open to training DVMs who are interested in improving their high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) skills. Shifts are scheduled based on your availability.

Essential Duties and Functions

• Assess animals pre- and post-operatively to ensure appropriate candidacy for surgery and healing
• Perform 25+ high-quality spay/neuter surgical procedures per day for client-owned and shelter animals, as well as community cats.
• Diagnose and treat post-surgical medical complications of outpatient animals
• Follow and support all organizational and medical protocols
• Adhere to aseptic/sterile techniques throughout the surgical process
• Must be able to work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment
• Collaborate with resident partner shelter veterinarian and shelter staff to ensure proper collection of data to maintain comprehensive and detailed medical records in compliance with all laws/regulations.
• Provide select veterinary services, including mass removals, wound management, and other minor procedures in accordance with SF SPCA guidelines.
• Comply with all laws pertaining to controlled drugs and work with our pharmacy staff as needed to follow prescription protocols.
• Triage and refer cases that do not fall within the clinic’s parameters of care as appropriate.
• Evaluate shelter animals and community cats and perform humane euthanasia of suffering or unhealthy animals as needed.

• Regular standing, bending, stooping, and crouching while seeing patients and performing surgery
• Intermittent sitting at computer stations and operation of electronic equipment
• Regularly moves about the campus to coordinate work
• Frequent lifting, carrying animals weighing up to 50 pounds
• Exposure to disinfectant solutions when in the kennel area
• Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals
• Consistent exposure to animals in the workplace and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available

Education and Experience:

• Graduated from an accredited veterinary medical college – DVM or equivalent
• Licensed to practice in the State of California
• Experience in HQHVSN or shelter medicine is a plus, but not required

Compensation:

The daily rate is $1,300.00 per 8 hour shift
