Job Description
The Assistant Plant Operator – Biogas Landfill supports the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of landfill gas collection and biogas processing systems. This position assists in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of equipment used to capture, process, and manage landfill gas while maintaining compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
The Assistant Plant Operator works closely with the Plant Operator and operations team to monitor system performance, perform routine inspections, conduct basic maintenance, and document operational data. This role requires strong attention to safety, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Key ResponsibilitiesAssist in the daily operation and monitoring of landfill gas and biogas processing equipment.
Perform routine inspections of gas collection systems, pumps, blowers, compressors, and related equipment.
Record and monitor operating data, meter readings, and system performance metrics.
Assist with preventive maintenance and minor repairs on plant equipment and systems.
Support troubleshooting of mechanical and operational issues to maintain efficient system performance.
Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and operational regulations.
Maintain accurate logs, reports, and operational records.
Assist with sampling, testing, and monitoring of landfill gas systems as required.
Coordinate with plant operators, technicians, and management to support daily plant operations.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
Assist with other operational duties or projects as assigned.
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Technical training, certification, or an Associate’s Degree in mechanical, electrical, environmental, or related field preferred.
Previous experience in industrial operations, landfill operations, gas systems, utilities, or plant operations preferred.
Basic knowledge of mechanical equipment, pumps, motors, and industrial systems.
Ability to read gauges, meters, and operational data.
Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and around industrial equipment.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as walking, climbing, and bending.
Strong attention to safety procedures and regulatory compliance.
Basic computer skills for data entry and operational reporting.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
A valid driver’s license may be required.
Experience with landfill gas systems, biogas processing, or renewable energy operations.
Knowledge of environmental compliance and landfill operations.
OSHA safety training or other industrial safety certifications.
Full-time position
May require shift work, weekends, or on-call availability depending on plant operations.
