Description:

WHO WE ARE

AfriThrive is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing health equity and food security for immigrant, refugee, and underserved communities. Through culturally responsive food access, sustainable agriculture, community engagement, and Food as Medicine initiatives, we connect families with nutritious foods and resources that promote healthier lives and stronger communities.

WHO YOU ARE

  • A mission-driven leader committed to equitable access to nutritious, culturally appropriate food.
  • An experienced program manager who can organize multiple service locations, supervise teams, and deliver dependable services.
  • A strong communicator who builds productive relationships with schools, families, community organizations, and public agencies.
  • A resourceful, organized professional who brings initiative, financial accountability, and consistent follow-through.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The Program Manager will lead AfriThrive’s program implementation and strengthen its community presence in Prince George’s County. The initial priority is launching and managing school-based food markets, maintaining strong school relationships, and ensuring reliable, dignified service to families.

The position oversees county program operations, assigned staff, community partnerships, and program performance. Working collaboratively with AfriThrive’s food access, operations, volunteer management, and Food as Medicine teams, the manager will build the systems and relationships needed to deliver effective services and support sustainable growth.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Program Management & Operations

  • Lead the planning, launch, and ongoing delivery of school-based food markets and other assigned county programs.
  • Develop workplans, distribution schedules, site procedures, and contingency plans that meet program and contract requirements.
  • Coordinate food quantities, delivery arrangements, equipment, and site readiness with food access and operations staff.
  • Oversee market setup, food displays, participant check-in, replenishment, and site closeout to ensure an orderly, welcoming experience.
  • Monitor service quality, resolve implementation challenges, and improve program delivery using family and partner feedback.

2. School & Community Partnerships

  • Serve as AfriThrive’s primary operational contact for participating schools and county program partners.
  • Build and maintain relationships with school leaders, community organizations, faith communities, and public agencies.
  • Establish clear partner responsibilities, communication practices, and referral arrangements, ensuring timely follow-through on commitments.
  • Represent AfriThrive at relevant meetings and identify partnerships that strengthen services and community presence.

3. Family Engagement & Program Development

  • Collaborate with school liaisons and community partners to coordinate family outreach, registration, and communication.
  • Develop systems to identify and address barriers to participation, including language, scheduling, accessibility, and food preferences.
  • Support Food as Medicine outreach and referrals in collaboration with the Food as Medicine team.
  • Recommend practical service improvements and contribute community insights to program planning and funding proposals.

4. Team Development & Supervision

  • Hire, onboard, supervise, coach, and evaluate assigned program staff in coordination with People Operations.
  • Establish clear responsibilities, schedules, performance expectations, and accountability practices.
  • Coordinate volunteer recruitment, training, and deployment with AfriThrive’s volunteer management function.
  • Prepare staff and volunteers to follow food safety, participant service, and documentation procedures.

5. Program Data, Reporting, Financial Management & Compliance

  • Establish and maintain systems for consistent data collection, entry, verification, and reporting across sites, tracking households and individuals served, repeat participation, pounds of food distributed, and completed household market visits.
  • Train staff on documentation requirements and review records for completeness, accuracy, and duplicate entries.
  • Collaborate with the impact team to analyze participation, service trends, and family feedback, improve program delivery, and prepare timely reports.
  • Monitor program budgets and expenditures with finance staff and provide verified service documentation for contract requirements and invoicing.
Requirements:

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, public health, business administration, community development, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least three years of relevant experience in community program implementation, food access, school partnerships, or related service delivery, including staff or volunteer supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple sites, develop effective systems, manage competing priorities, and deliver results.
  • Strong project management, communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience managing budgets, maintaining program records, and preparing reports.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, and databases or program management systems.
  • Commitment to culturally responsive service and ability to work effectively with diverse communities.
  • Ability to travel regularly between program locations.

Preferred: Experience with school-based food programs, food distribution, grant or contract requirements, and food safety practices; familiarity with Prince George’s County; and additional language skills relevant to participating families.

WHY JOIN AFRITHRIVE?

  • Make a meaningful difference in the lives of families through culturally responsive food access.
  • Join a collaborative team working at the intersection of food security, sustainable agriculture, and community health.
  • Lead the development of school-based food markets and lasting community partnerships.
  • Contribute your leadership to an organization committed to community-centered solutions and lasting impact.
