The Multi-Family HVAC Installer is responsible for installing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in multi-family residential construction projects, including apartment communities, condominiums, townhomes, and other multi-unit developments.

The position is responsible for completing HVAC installations efficiently and safely while following construction plans, specifications, manufacturer requirements, applicable codes, company standards, and project schedules.

The Multi-Family HVAC Installer works as part of a construction crew and coordinates with Foremen, Superintendents, Project Managers, General Contractors, and other trades to complete installations and meet project deadlines.

• Install HVAC systems and components in multi-family residential construction projects.

• Install HVAC equipment including:

  • Split systems

  • Heat pumps

  • Condensing units

  • Air handlers

  • Furnaces

  • Fan coil units

  • Package units

  • Exhaust fans

  • Fresh-air and ventilation equipment

  • Thermostats and HVAC controls

• Install HVAC systems for individual apartment units, common areas, amenity spaces, offices, and other designated areas.

• Install ductwork, fittings, transitions, boots, registers, grilles, and other air distribution components.

• Install refrigerant lines, copper piping, condensate drains, and related components.

• Perform copper brazing and soldering using proper procedures.

• Use nitrogen during brazing as required.

• Pressure test refrigerant piping systems.

• Evacuate and vacuum refrigerant systems to required specifications.

• Install and properly insulate refrigerant lines and piping.

• Install condensate drain lines and verify proper drainage.

• Install equipment supports, hangers, brackets, and other required mounting systems.

• Install low-voltage wiring for thermostats, controls, sensors, and HVAC equipment.

• Complete HVAC connections in accordance with project requirements and applicable codes.

• Read and interpret mechanical plans, blueprints, specifications, and installation details.

• Follow unit layouts and standardized installation procedures to maintain consistency throughout the project.

• Verify equipment locations and installation dimensions before beginning work.

• Identify conflicts with plumbing, electrical, framing, drywall, or other trades and notify the Foreman or Superintendent.

• Assist with equipment startup, testing, and commissioning.

• Inspect completed installations for proper operation, quality, and workmanship.

• Complete punch-list items and correct installation deficiencies.

• Maintain production levels necessary to meet project schedules.

• Work efficiently while maintaining quality and safety standards.

• Maintain a clean and organized work area and remove installation debris as required.

• Protect installed HVAC equipment and finished surfaces from damage.

• Properly handle and store HVAC materials and equipment.

• Report material shortages, damaged materials, installation issues, and jobsite delays to the Foreman or Supervisor.

• Follow all company, project, OSHA, and jobsite safety requirements.

• Attend required safety meetings and training.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Because multi-family projects typically involve multiple units being constructed simultaneously, the Installer is expected to:

• Complete assigned units according to the project schedule.

• Maintain consistent installation practices from unit to unit.

• Meet daily and weekly production expectations established by the Foreman.

• Coordinate installation work with the overall construction schedule.

• Work efficiently within occupied construction areas while protecting completed work.

• Communicate immediately when materials, access, inspections, or other trades are preventing progress.

• Maintain quality across multiple units and buildings.

• Complete assigned phases of installation before moving to the next scheduled area.

• Assist with rework, corrections, inspections, and punch-list completion when required.

The Multi-Family HVAC Installer may perform some or all of the following installation activities:

• Equipment startup

• Operational testing

• Identification of installation deficiencies

• Assistance with inspections and commissioning

• Install HVAC systems according to approved plans, specifications, and manufacturer requirements.

• Maintain consistent workmanship throughout all units.

• Ensure ductwork, piping, equipment, and components are properly supported and secured.

• Verify refrigerant piping is properly installed, brazed, pressure tested, evacuated, and insulated.

• Ensure condensate lines are properly installed and draining correctly.

• Ensure thermostats and controls are installed correctly.

• Prevent damage to equipment, walls, flooring, cabinetry, and other finished surfaces.

• Correct deficiencies identified during inspections.

• Complete punch-list work within established project deadlines.

• Report any installation concerns to the Foreman before proceeding with work that may require rework.

• Follow all company and jobsite safety policies and procedures.

• Wear required PPE at all times.

• Follow fall-protection requirements when working at elevated locations.

• Properly use ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and other access equipment.

• Follow safe procedures when using torches, brazing equipment, nitrogen, refrigerants, and power tools.

• Maintain a clean and safe work area.

• Properly secure tools and materials.

• Follow electrical safety procedures.

• Report injuries, property damage, unsafe conditions, and near misses immediately to the appropriate Supervisor or Safety personnel.

• Attend required safety meetings and training.

The Installer may be required to safely operate and use:

Employees are responsible for properly maintaining company-issued tools and equipment and reporting lost, damaged, or defective equipment.

• Previous HVAC installation experience preferred.

• Experience with residential or multi-family HVAC installation preferred.

• Knowledge of HVAC installation methods and construction practices.

• Ability to read and understand mechanical plans and blueprints.

• Ability to identify HVAC components and materials.

• Experience with refrigerant piping and copper brazing preferred.

• Ability to properly use HVAC hand tools and power tools.

• Basic understanding of HVAC systems and components.

• Ability to work efficiently in a production-based construction environment.

• Ability to work as part of a team and follow direction from the Foreman or Superintendent.

• Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and other trades.

• Dependable attendance and punctuality.

• Valid driver's license may be required depending on company and project requirements.

The employee must be able to:

• Lift and carry HVAC equipment, ductwork, piping, tools, and materials.

• Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and reach.

• Work above ceilings and in attics or other limited-access areas.

• Work in crawl spaces and other confined or restricted areas when required.

• Work from ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and elevated work areas when properly trained and authorized.

• Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

• Perform repetitive movements associated with HVAC installation.

• Safely use hand tools and power tools.

• Move materials throughout active construction sites.
