Job Description

Advanced Mechanical Engineer – System Design & Product Definition - 903

We are seeking an Advanced Mechanical Engineer – System Design & Product Definition in our Broomfield, CO location to own the physical design and controlled product definition of next-generation quantum computing systems. This role combines hands-on mechanical design with system-level ownership of physical integration, product structure, and configuration-controlled documentation.

The ideal candidate will define how the quantum computer and its major subsystems fit together—and how the complete system fits within the room that supports it. This includes equipment placement, subsystem interfaces, enclosures, operator and service access, cable and utility routing, installation requirements, and the efficient use of physical space. They will ensure that subsystems snap together as a visually cohesive and buildable product.

In addition, this role will serve as the team’s primary engineering conduit into product documentation. They will establish and maintain the system product structure, keep CAD, drawings, BOMs, and released configurations aligned, and bring disciplined product-definition practices to designs transitioning from research hardware into production.

This role is ideal for an engineer who combines strong design judgment, whole-system thinking, and a genuine commitment to clear, well-organized engineering data.

All applicants for placement in safety-sensitive positions will be required to submit a pre-employment drug test

Key Responsibilities:
  • System-level mechanical design of the quantum computer and the physical environment in which it is installed.
  • Develop equipment layouts, structural interfaces, enclosures, service access, and room-level space plans.
  • Define mechanical and physical interfaces across optical, electrical, thermal, vacuum, fluid, and facility systems, including volumetric constraints and mechanical interface control documents
  • Allocate mechanical requirements down to subsystems
  • Create and maintain top-level CAD assemblies, drawings, interface definitions, BOMs, and related documentation
  • Work with larger engineering team to create and maintain the system product structure, ensuring assemblies, components, revisions, and released configurations remain accurate and aligned.
  • The design of system enclosures and external features, balancing performance, manufacturability, serviceability, safety, and industrial design.
  • Resolve system-level packaging, access, interface, and configuration conflicts across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Support prototype and first-article builds, capture as-built configurations, and drive updates through formal change and release processes.
  • Promote disciplined CAD, PLM, naming, product-structure, and configuration-control practices across the team.
YOU MUST HAVE:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • +6 years of related work experience
  • Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. Person defined as, U.S. citizen permanent resident or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status.
  • Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen.
WE VALUE:
  • 4+ years of related work experience
  • Experience using Onshape for large system assemblies and production documentation.
  • Experience using Arena or another PLM system to manage product structures, BOMs, revisions, and engineering changes.
  • Experience designing large scientific instruments, semiconductor equipment, aerospace systems, medical devices, industrial automation equipment, or other low-volume, high-complexity products.
  • Experience planning laboratories, equipment rooms, customer installations, or other physical environments around complex hardware systems.
  • Experience integrating mechanical, optical, electrical, vacuum, thermal, fluid, and software-controlled hardware.
  • Strong industrial design instincts and experience translating aesthetic requirements into manufacturable enclosure designs.
  • Experience with 21-inch racks, equipment cabinets, sheet-metal enclosures, cable management, utility distribution, and service-access planning.
  • Experience creating interface control drawings, interconnect diagrams, installation drawings, or connection schematics.
  • A strong commitment to product organization, configuration accuracy, and documentation that enables others to build, install, operate, maintain, and evolve complex systems.

Compensation & Benefits

The pay range for this role is $116,000 – $145,000 annually. Actual compensation within this range may vary based on the candidate's skills, educational background, professional experience, and unique qualifications for the role.
