Job Description

POSITION: Content Specialist

DEPARTMENT: Youth Services

LOCATION: Brooklyn: PS 196 Ten Eyck at 207 Bushwick Ave, Brooklyn NY 11206

REPORTS TO: Program Director/ Assistant Program Director

SALARY: $40 per hour (15 hours per week)

SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday Between 3:00pm to 6:00pm, schedule may be modified based on program needs. Open availability needed for School Holidays breaks; schedule is 8:00am until 6:00pm

JOB SUMMARY: As part of the Youth Services Department’s vision: All Youth Services Staff will assist in promoting growth, leadership and positive self-image in all young people at all of the Grand Street Settlement’s sites. The Education Specialists will promote and develop a safe and engaging learning environment for youth. Homework help, small group tutoring or individualized tutoring, creating literacy and STEM lessons, as well as supervising group leaders’ facilitation of lessons is included as part of the Education Specialist’s scope of work.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree in Education or related fields, preferred.
  • Must have experience teaching and designing curricula.
  • Prior experience supervising staff required.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience and expertise working with youth (volunteer experience is acceptable).
  • Three (3) or more years of experience coaching, instructing, or facilitating curriculum-based lessons (to youth preferred).
  • Experience working with youth in grades K-12 required.
  • The ideal candidate should be personable, energetic, and enthusiastic.
  • Candidates must be able to communicate effectively with all students and participants while remaining professional at all times.
  • Ability to motivate the students while setting an example in all areas, including responsibility, timeliness, organization, attendance and most importantly, professionalism.
  • Candidate should successfully complete the following: NYSDOH Fingerprinting Screening; New York State Clearance Review Background Check-$25 nonrefundable fee; three (3) Reference Checks; Physical with updated TB Test (fees may apply).
  • Valid CPR/AED Pro certification through recognized accrediting body preferred.
  • Valid First Aid/RTE certification through recognized accrediting body preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee tutoring component of the program and supervise academic tutors.
  • Assess students academic progress: collecting report cards and entering report grids, communicating to parents, teachers, and school administration.
  • Create and develop individual educational plans.
  • Oversee group leader’s facilitation of lesson plans.
  • Conduct observations of lessons and meet with group leaders to discuss strategies.
  • Coordinate and facilitate academic activities such as games and events.
  • Prepare reports as required.
  • Problem solve and intervene directly with youth.
  • Perform special projects as assigned from time-to-time.
  • Engage children and young adults into conversation to determine their needs and interests.
  • Plan and facilitate all program activities to meet the individual needs of the participants.
  • Conduct staff training to ensure that all personnel are on the same page regarding achievement of program objectives.
  • Coordinate community relations campaigns to promote youth programs.
  • Provide literacy intervention materials and resources to members of educational programs.
  • Provide job preparation services individually and through workshops including training in resume building, dressing for success, and interview preparation.
  • Provide support for staff that are running other youth development or support service programs.
  • Develop and coordinate youth development programs as defined through grant contracts and community needs.
  • Coordinate annual workshop series for college applications and topics including financial aid, scholarships, and personal statement writing.
  • Evaluate programs to ensure that they meet the needs of the youth and are effective in producing their intended outcomes.
