Job Description
Howlett Farms is seeking CDL Class A Drivers to transport grain, feed, and other agricultural commodities between farms, facilities, customers, and Howlett Farms locations across Western and Central New York and surrounding areas (local). Drivers are an essential part of our operation and help keep agriculture moving every day.
Schedule
This position does not have a set daily schedule, but early risers capitalize on reduced end-user traffic and shorter unload lines. Start and end times vary seasonally based on weather, customer demand, and operational needs. The ideal candidate must be a good communicator and be able to adapt to changing schedules as needed.
Essential Functions:
- Safely operate commercial vehicles in accordance with company policies, DOT regulations, and applicable traffic laws.
- Transport agricultural products to customers and facilities throughout the region.
- Complete deliveries and pickups accurately, efficiently, and on-time.
- Perform routine vehicle inspections.
- Verify load information and ensure loads are properly secured.
- Maintain accurate transportation and delivery documentation.
- Communicate with dispatch, customers (farmers), and team members (mill managers, facility managers, grain originators) regarding schedules, deliveries, delays, and operational needs.
- Report accidents, incidents, equipment concerns, or safety issues promptly.
- Maintain the cleanliness and general condition of assigned trucks, trailers, and equipment.
- Work closely with the maintenance and shop team regarding vehicle repairs and preventative maintenance.
- Provide professional and courteous customer service at farms, mills, elevators, and customer locations.
- Assist with other trucking, operational, or facility-related duties as needed.

- HS Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Valid Class A CDL.
- Previous commercial driving experience; ag hauling experience preferred.
- Knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations and commercial vehicle inspections.
- Experience with Power Units including Peterbilt, Kenworth Day Cabs and Sleepers, and 18-speed manual transmission.
- Experience with Trailer Types including hopper bottom, end-dump (required), belt trailer (required), and auger trailer (required).
- Ability to meet and maintain all DOT, licensing, and medical requirements.
- Strong attendance, reliability, and communication skills.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule based on business needs.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to sit and drive for extended periods.
- Must be able to enter and exit truck cabs frequently.
- Must be able to squat, crouch, reach, push, and pull as needed.
- Must be able to inspect vehicles, trailers, and loads.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and assist with loading, unloading, and load securement when necessary.
- Must be able work in a noisy, dusty environment (appropriate PPE provided).
- Must be prepared to withstand exposure to seasonal weather conditions, including extreme heat and extreme cold.
- Must remain alert and attentive while driving.
Employment is contingent upon successfully completing all required DOT/FMCSA pre-employment requirements, including pre-employment drug test, driver qualification review, FMCSA Clearinghouse queries, and motor vehicle record verification.
CDL drivers are subject to DOT/FMCSA drug and alcohol testing requirements, including random testing. Howlett Farms is a drug- and alcohol-free workplace.
