About This Position
MINE GEOLOGIST
CORE PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION:
The Mine Geologist is under the direction of the Chief Mine Geologist and provides support to all geologic functions required by Technical Services, Mine, and Process Teams to achieve mining objectives
KEY PERFORMANCE AREA CORE RESPONSIBILITIES/MEASURES OF SUCCESS
Position profile: The Mine Geologist is under the direction of the Chief Mine Geologist and provides support to all the teams at the mine to achieve mining objectives.
• The Mine Geologist is responsible for daily Ore Control Functions, including but not limited to: ore control releases, monitoring sampling, QA\QC of ore control samples, and tracking of material.
• The Mine Geologist will also be responsible for highwall mapping and working with other departments to assure the best possible recovery at the site.
• The Mine Geologist will work with other members of the Technical Services Group to assure timely and accurate reporting on a monthly and annual basis.
• Is also responsible for all aspects of infill and geotechnical drilling completed within the area of the pit.
Essential Responsibilities/Safety & Environment
• Contribute to a positive safety culture by actively participating in safety initiatives, including pre-start checks, EHS meetings, and workplace inspections (which includes the open pit)
• Commitment to the identification, notification and/or rectification of all unsafe acts, situations and hazards within the workplace
• Liaise with the Chief Mine Geologist with respect to health, safety and environment issues.
• Be situationally aware of constant changes within the active open pit workplace.
General
• Liaise with the Chief Mine Geologist with respect to work direction.
• Participate in work planning sessions, production meetings, and technical meetings as required.
• Logging all blastholes for rock type, alteration, mineralization, and importing the logged data into the database on a regular and timely basis.
• Responsible for the timely submittal of samples, standards, and blanks to the Laboratory
• Timely follow up on sample discrepancies as highlighted by the Laboratory or Database Manager
• Ensure an appropriate and sufficient stock of geological consumables, especially sample bags.
Mine Geology Duties
• Responsible for density sample collection, testing, validating data, and updating density files.
• Participate in blast movement monitoring as required.
• Timely data collection, data entry, data validation and data update as required.
• Ensure all equipment is stored correctly and equipment is placed on charge if appropriate.
• Participate in additional sampling campaigns as required.
• Complete geological and geotechnical mapping on a regular basis.
• Support Engineering in Survey activities at the discretion of the Chief Mine Geologist
• Other duties as assigned by the Chief Mine Geologist
Health, Safety & Environmental
• Strong commitment to safe work practices
• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Geology or similar field.
• Valid Drivers’ license required.
• Lift, push, pull to 50lbs.
• Must be able to use mine radios and other forms of verbal communication.
• Performs essential job duties at elevations more than 8800 feet.
Qualifications, skills and abilities
• Three (3) to 5 years of experience in open pit mine geology preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to work in an outdoor and in the open pit, sometimes in inclement weather.
• Punctuality and regular attendance required.
• Ability to work autonomously and as part of team.
• Ability to prioritize, organize, and meet deadlines.
• Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
• Strong verbal, written, numeracy, and analytical skills.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft office products
• Ability to learn and use mine related software including but not limited to: Deswik, Leapfrog, or Datamine.
