About This Position

Under general supervision, performs supervisory and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of City parks and recreational facilities. Supervises maintenance staff responsible for upkeep of parks and recreation grounds and buildings throughout the City. Work involves assessing, coordinating, and directing maintenance for parks, athletic fields, and buildings including plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, roofing, electrical, and code compliance; and performing routine administrative and personnel duties. Reports to the Grounds Maintenance Superintendent.

  • Directs, schedules, and participates in athletic field maintenance, which includes dragging, irrigating, mowing, lining off, and general maintenance and manicuring fields and digging graves.
  • Digs and backfills graves in city cemeteries.
  • Setup special events preparation.
  • Directs, schedules, and participates in the maintenance and repair of buildings, park facilities, and equipment.
  • Assists and offers advice in planning and designing new facilities and/or renovation of existing facilities.
  • Assists in scheduling, training, assigning and supervising park maintenance workers and maintains routine personnel-payroll records and reports for members of staff.
  • Discusses workers' job performance with supervisor.
  • Assists in planning special projects.
  • Assists in the maintenance of inventory of supplies and equipment for park and maintenance staff.
  • Oversees maintenance of division equipment and vehicles
  • Assists in purchasing of equipment.
  • Serves as "essential personnel" to report for duty in case of inclement weather, natural or manmade disaster, etc.
  • Supervises activities of community service workers assigned by courts and City jail inmates assigned to work release.
  • Performs administrative functions such as preparing time cards, record work done on daily bases. Schedules work in accordance with priorities estimated schedules.
  • Coordinates and controls manpower and financial, materials and equipment effectively and efficiently.
  • Serves as on-call employee in cases of after-hours emergency; serves as "essential personnel" to report for duty in cases of inclement weather, natural or manmade disaster, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as are assigned.


Associate's degree in construction and trade work, or a related field, and 6 to 9 years of supervisory experience in parks and recreational facilities operation and maintenance work, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Requires a valid commercial driver's license.

General Knowledge of, athletics field markings, landscaping, plumbing, carpentry, roofing, HVAC, electrical, and pesticide handler certification preferred and code compliance required.

  • Knowledge of equipment, materials and tools used in the construction, maintenance and upkeep of parks and associated facilities. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions related to the work.
  • Knowledge of established policies, procedures, rules and regulations regarding the operation of parks.
  • Knowledge of basic grounds keeping, carpentry, plumbing, and related maintenance trades.
  • Knowledge of the costs of materials and supplies necessary to park and athletic field construction.
  • Knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization and administration.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment employed in the construction and maintenance of parks.
  • Ability to plan, implement and monitor adherence to a maintenance schedule for park grounds and equipment.
  • Ability to exercise considerable independent judgment in performing daily work activities. Is able to prepare and maintain routine work records and reports.
  • Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with park patrons, civic and community groups, and the general public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
  • Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from superiors.
  • Ability to read a variety of documents, reports, records, invoices, checks, etc. Requires the ability to prepare checks, warrants, correspondence and other related reports using prescribed formats.
  • Ability to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques. Requires the ability to make independent judgments in absence of supervision. Must be able to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.
  • Ability to utilize mathematical formulas. Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Must be able to utilize decimals and percentages.
  • Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress when confronted with persons acting under stress.
