Job Description
Purpose of Job The Technician – Prototyping & Machining supports engineering, design services, and R&D activities by fabricating, modifying, and assembling medical device prototypes, tooling, and fixtures. This role emphasizes hands-on machining and prototype manufacturing using CNC, manual, and custom-developed equipment. The position requires a demonstrated willingness and capability to personally manufacture a wide variety of medical device prototypes while collaborating closely with engineers in a regulated environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesFabricate, modify, and assemble medical device prototypes, tooling, fixtures, and experimental components.Set up and operate manual and CNC machining equipment including mills, lathes, grinders, and specialty equipment.Manufacture prototype components using processes such as CNC machining, tube bending, forming, swaging, tip grinding, laser cutting, and laser welding.Perform metal-to-plastic assembly, integrating machined metal parts with injection-molded or rapid-prototyped components.Support rapid design iteration by modifying prototype components based on engineering feedback.Read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, sketches, and GD&T specifications.Use precision inspection tools to verify dimensional accuracy and conformance to specifications.Maintain a clean, organized, and safe lab and tool room environment.Comply with all safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.Qualifications & SkillsHigh School Diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training in machining or manufacturing preferred.Associate degree in Engineering Technology or related field is a plus.Experience :With a degree: 1–5 years of professional experience in technical, engineering, or laboratory environments.With a high school education: 7–10 years of senior-level, hands-on experience in machine operation, prototyping, and assembly work.Demonstrated experience operating manual and CNC machining equipment; CNC programming exposure (G-code and/or CAM systems) preferred.Strong understanding of machining methods, tolerances, materials, and tooling selection.Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications.Familiarity with plastic injection molding processes is a plus.Experience working in ISO 13485 and FDA-regulated environments preferred.
