About This Position
The Accounting Manager oversees all financial operations of a government-funded nonprofit, ensuring accurate accounting, strong internal controls, and full compliance with federal, state, and local grant requirements. This role manages the accounting team, leads the month-end close, coordinates audits (including the Single Audit), and provides financial insights that support organizational stability and mission impact.
Responsibilities:
Financial Management & Month-End Close
• Lead monthly close, ensuring timely reconciliations and accurate financial statements.
• Maintain the chart of accounts, grant coding, and financial system data integrity.
• Prepare cash-flow forecasts and monitor liquidity tied to reimbursement-based grants. Grant & Fund Accounting
• Ensure compliance with 2 CFR 200 (Uniform Guidance), including allowable costs, cost allocation, procurement, and documentation requirements.
• Manage budgeting, tracking, reporting, and revenue recognition for government grants, restricted funds, and multi-source funding.
• Oversee time & effort reporting, payroll allocation, and grant-specific expenditure reviews. Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls
• Lead all audit processes, including the Single Audit (A-133), financial statement audit, and grantor monitoring visits.
• Prepare SEFA schedules, supporting documentation, and corrective action plans as needed.
• Maintain and enforce internal controls, financial policies, and compliance workflows aligned with federal and grantor requirements. Treasury, Reporting & Analysis
• Prepare monthly financial reports for senior leadership, programs, and the Board/Finance Committee.
• Monitor receivables, reimbursement submissions, and payment timing from government agencies.
• Provide financial analysis, budget-to-actual reviews, and insights to guide operational and strategic decisions. Systems, Processes & Continuous Improvement
• Manage accounting system configurations and integrations (payroll, AP automation, CRM/donor systems).
• Lead process improvements, automation initiatives, and documentation of procedures.
• Ensure consistent application of cost allocation, indirect cost rates, and grant compliance procedures. Leadership & Cross-Department Collaboration
• Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff.
• Partner with program managers to ensure accurate grant spending and compliance.
• Collaborate with development/fundraising teams on grant proposal budgets and reporting requirements.
Minimum Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
● Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
● Strong knowledge of nonprofit and fund accounting, GAAP, and grant compliance.
● Experience with federal, state, and local government-funded programs.
● Experience preparing financial statements and managing audits.
● Organized and able to prioritize work with strong attention to detail and accuracy
● Valid Driver’s License, Insurance, and reliable transportation
● Deep familiarity with the North Lawndale community preferred
Preferred Qualifications:
● Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation.
● Experience with Single Audits, 2 CFR 200, SEFA preparation, and government grant reporting.
● Experience working in or with non-profit organizations, including familiarity with grant management and reporting.
● Advanced skills in financial analysis and budgeting software.
● Knowledge of IRS regulations related to non-profit organizations and Form 990 preparation.
● Strong project management skills and experience implementing accounting system improvements.
● Experience with financial systems integration or automation projects.

Strong leadership and communication skills are employed to guide the accounting team, collaborate with program managers, and liaise with auditors and regulatory bodies. Proficiency in accounting software and Excel enables efficient management of financial records and reporting processes. Additionally, knowledge of compliance requirements ensures that all financial activities meet legal and ethical standards, safeguarding the organization’s reputation and resources.
Work Environment/Travel
While performing the duties of this job, the employee works mostly in the field with some occasional work in an office environment that is quiet to moderately loud, depending on the work area. Some local, county, or state travel may be required, which may include overnight stays. Occasional travel outside of the State of Illinois may be required. Must possess and maintain an applicable Illinois Driver's License, a clean driving record, and auto insurance that meets state requirements.
