Project Engineer
Position Type: Regular Full-Time

Description:

Responsible for cross-functionally planning and executing new product development projects through engineering and operations from concept through commercial launch. This position reports to the Mechanical Engineering Manager and will work closely with Product Managers, engineering team members, and all functional areas of the organization to ensure project objectives are met.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develop new products from concept to production utilizing leadership and project management skills, mechanical engineering principles, and creativity. This includes determining the technical and financial feasibility of new products and improvements in collaboration with the Product Innovation Team. Once products are approved, assume responsibility to plan and lead engineering and related functions to complete product development projects within committed timeframes.
  • Plan, document, and manage development projects in accordance with the product development ISO process, and associated processes.
  • Compile and consolidate product requirements from product management, sales, marketing, customer service, etc., to complete Product Specifications to drive product designs.
  • Plan and lead design and project reviews on a regular basis in order to meet project objectives.
  • Generate design concepts using parametric solid and sheet metal modeling, and produce production drawings and specifications, in accordance with relevant standards and ISO procedures, to include geometry, materials, finishes, fits, and tolerances as required to manufacture components and assemblies.
  • Evaluate designs and manufacturing methods to ensure products are cost effective.
  • Structure and load complete bills of materials into the manufacturing ERP system.
  • Perform design calculations such as stress and deflection to insure designs are safe and reliable.
  • Prototype components and assemblies to validate design manufacturability, fit, and function.
  • Plan, execute, analyze, and document results of internal or external reliability test programs.
  • Prepare technical product information, specifications, and images required for sales, marketing, application, and installation materials.
  • Evaluate and conduct redesigns of existing products in order to reduce costs, improve manufacturability, or improve product performance.
  • Assist sales teams and distribution partners with proper application of existing products, and evaluation of new product opportunities.
  • Collaboratively work in a team environment with manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, production supervisors, purchasing agents, machine programmers, and other cross functional personnel throughout all design stages to insure designs are optimized for manufacturing.
  • Share expertise with, and mentor other Spacesaver groups such as sales support, manufacturing engineering, production teams, installation teams, etc.

    Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
    • Minimum of 5 years product design and project management experience.
    • Demonstrated project management and cross-functional team leadership experience with career interest in continued growth in this area.
    • Experience with common manufacturing processes including: sheet metal fabrication, stamping, aluminum and steel welding, machining, extrusions, etc. Plastic component design experience preferred.
    • Experience with structural design, electro-mechanical systems, and power transmission design.
    • Working knowledge of structural analysis techniques. Finite element analysis experience beneficial.
    • Solid modeling experience required. Creo/ProE and sheet metal experience preferred.
    • ERP system familiarity including structured bill of material data entry.
    • MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project proficiency required.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects under time restrictions.
    • General knowledge of ISO 9001 compliance and Lean manufacturing principles.
    • Travel up to 20% to obtain customer input, validate product performance, and troubleshoot issues.
