Position Summary:

This position performs a variety of duties in support of the library including shelving library materials, processing new library cards, and checking books and materials in and out.

Essential Job Functions:

Greets visitors; answers telephone and e-mail requests; assists customers or refers to appropriate personnel.

Assists patrons in the location, referral, and selection of materials and related information.

Conducts circulation activities including charging and discharging materials, accepts payments for fines, lost and damaged items.

Issues and renews library cards for patrons; ensures patrons’ accounts are accurate and up to date.

Sorts books and audio-visual materials after they are checked in; loads items on carts and places in order before shelving.

Shelves materials returned to or used within the library.

Checks shelves for accuracy; shifts materials on shelves as needed.

Straightens shelves.

Empties book drop; sorts and discharges materials; and loads carts.

Assists with closing duties; ensures all customers have exited library, picks up materials; straightens furniture.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the staff, supervisor, and the public.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both written and verbal form.

Must be proficient in workplace English and spelling.

Ability to read City policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence; SDS sheets, safety manuals, maps, etc.

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

Must be at least 16 years of age.
