A Global Moment for Rhode Island
In June of 2026, the FIFA World Cup comes to New England the largest sporting event in the world, comparable in scale and impact to seven Super Bowls. While matches will take place in Foxborough, Rhode Island will serve as a hospitality, fan engagement, and team support hub, welcoming tens of thousands of international visitors through airports, train stations, fan zones, and potential team basecamps.
United Way of Rhode Island will lead the statewide volunteer effort to ensure this global moment delivers lasting economic, civic, and community impact.
Position Overview
United Way of Rhode Island is seeking a Volunteer Manager (Contract) to support the planning and execution of Rhode Island Summer of Soccer 2026 volunteer program. This contractor will be responsible for recruiting, training, scheduling, and supporting hundreds of volunteers across 39 days of programming, serving as a key operational leader during live activations.
This role is execution-focused, fast-paced, and highly visible, requiring strong volunteer management experience and the ability to lead in real-time, high-pressure environments.
Scope of Work
Volunteer Recruitment & Community Engagement
- Recruit, onboard, and manage a diverse, statewide volunteer corps reflective of Rhode Island’s communities and the global audience.
- Partner with nonprofits, community-based organizations, and corporate partners to mobilize volunteers, including those supported through community micro-grants.
- Support outreach to multilingual and underrepresented populations.
Training & Volunteer Readiness
- Coordinate volunteer orientations and trainings aligned with Rhode Island Summer of Soccer 2026.
- Manage training logistics, including locations, schedules, materials, and attendance tracking.
- Ensure volunteers are fully prepared to serve as ambassadors for Rhode Island.
Scheduling & Deployment
- Utilize UWRI’s Volunteer Center platform to schedule volunteers across multiple sites and shifts.
- Coordinate placements at:
- T.F. Green International Airport
- Train stations across Rhode Island
- Fan zones, visitor centers, and community events
- Assist with real-time schedule adjustments during live programming.
On-Site Volunteer Support
- Serve as a primary point of contact for volunteers during deployment.
- Availability to support volunteer operations during evenings, nights, and weekends as needed throughout the activation period.
- Support volunteer check-in, communication, and issue resolution across sites.
- Maintain volunteer morale, engagement, and retention throughout the activation period.
Coordination & Reporting
- Work closely with the Director of Business Development and UWRI staff to align execution with statewide strategy.
- Track volunteer engagement data, hours, and participation metrics.
- Contribute to post-event evaluation and legacy planning documentation.
Contractor Qualifications
- 3–5+ years of experience in volunteer management, event operations, or large-scale community engagement.
- Demonstrated experience managing high-volume volunteers across multiple locations.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working with diverse communities; multilingual skills preferred.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours during peak event periods.
- Comfortable operating as an independent contractor in a collaborative nonprofit environment.
Contract Terms
- Compensation: $30-35 an hour
- Fixed-term engagement from April through July 2026
- Scope and deliverables defined in a written contractor agreement
