What It’s Like to Work at GRID

The work is meaningful. The people are real. And there’s a lot more to working at GRID than what’s listed on a job description.

We believe our employees have a whole life outside of work. We support learning, growth, collaboration, and well-being—and we value the different experiences and perspectives people bring to the work.

We’re a mission-driven organization, but we’re also human. We’re looking for people who care about the work, are willing to collaborate, roll up their sleeves, and help us build a more equitable clean energy future.

About the Role

GRID Alternatives is seeking a detail-oriented Solar Site Survey Technician to conduct residential and commercial site assessments that support solar installation planning and construction. This role involves evaluating roof and electrical conditions, documenting existing solar equipment, collecting accurate measurements and photographs, and coordinating with customers and internal teams to ensure projects have the information needed to move forward.

What Success Looks Like

A successful Solar Site Survey Technician consistently delivers accurate, complete, and well-organized site documentation. Their work helps project teams understand existing site conditions, plan appropriate solar and storage installations, identify potential issues before construction begins, and minimize delays caused by missing information or repeat site visits.

They communicate clearly, exercise sound safety judgment, treat customers respectfully, and take ownership of the quality and timeliness of their work.

What you will be doing:

  • Conduct scheduled residential and commercial site surveys, documenting roof conditions, measurements, obstructions, access points, and potential installation concerns.
  • Assess and photograph electrical systems, including main service panels, breakers, utility meters, subpanels, inverters, disconnects, batteries, and existing solar equipment.
  • Identify potential equipment locations, conduit routes, clearances, and accessible attic or crawl space conditions.
  • Create basic site sketches and document relevant information on aerial maps or site plans.
  • Complete digital survey forms, upload photographs and measurements, and ensure documentation is accurate and complete before leaving each site.
  • Coordinate appointments, plan efficient travel routes, and communicate with homeowners, project partners, and internal teams regarding access issues, missing information, or unusual site conditions.
  • Support construction operations and related activities, including inspections and warehouse support, as needed.
  • Follow applicable safety procedures when conducting site assessments and working around roofs, ladders, electrical equipment, attics, crawl spaces and other potentially hazardous conditions
  • Other duties may be assigned

What You’ll Bring

We’re looking for someone who brings the skills, experience, and perspective needed to be successful in this role.

Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to candidates who are bilingual/biliterate in English/Spanish
  • Experience with PV system installation, solar site surveys, electrical work, solar inspections, or a related field.
  • Ability to identify solar and electrical equipment, take accurate measurements, and document technical information clearly.
  • Strong attention to detail and proficiency with smartphones, digital forms, and CRM or other data-entry systems.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and willingness to travel throughout neighboring counties.
  • Ability to use a 32-foot ladder when required and when properly trained and safe to do so.
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends as project needs require.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered where appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with battery storage systems, PV system design, roofing, electrical troubleshooting, or equipment from manufacturers such as Tesla, Enphase, SolarEdge, FranklinWH, Generac, or SMA.

Don’t meet every preferred qualification? We still encourage you to apply. We know that great candidates don’t always check every box.
