About This Position

CyRide is currently accepting applications for the position of Lane Worker, which works 15 - 19 hours per week. Under general supervision, Lane Workers perform routine daily vehicle servicing work in the fueling, cleaning, visually inspecting, and minor servicing of transit vehicles; cleaning and minor maintenance of facilities and grounds; and performs related work as required.

Lane workers are eligible for a $1,000 hiring wage incentive payable in three installments as follows:
1) $250 on first paycheck
2) $250 at completion of training and receipt of CDL (not permit)
3) $500 at 6 month mark

Work shifts:
Typical work weeks will include 3 shifts (15 - 19 hours) Monday-Thursday and a rotating weekend schedule (about one weekend a month). Shifts are scheduled at 3-5 hours each between the hours listed below:

Monday through Thursday
3:00pm and 1:30am
Friday
3:00pm and 3:30am
Saturday
6:00pm and 3:30am
Sunday
6:30pm and 12:30am

Due to the extensive training program that is available to all new CyRide employees, we request all applicants be committed to employment with CyRide for approximately 12 months or longer.

Performs minor servicing of vehicles; checks fluid levels such as transmission, anti-freeze, oil, and gas or fuel; adds fluids as necessary; checks tires and belts for service needed; reports maintenance repairs needed, such as changing lights, mirrors, and flashers; ensures special equipment is in place such as wheelchairs and safety equipment; cleans interior and exterior of vehicles; parks and arranges buses for daily runs; completes necessary paper work concerning services performed. Performs cleaning and minor maintenance of facilities and grounds; cleans building floors; removes snow using shovel, snow blower, or truck plow. Monitors radio and telephone as needed. Operates buses and other motor vehicles. May be required to wash walls, change filters in roof units, and mow lawns. May also be required to perform maintenance of bus shelters including emptying garbage, removing old and installing new wood boards, refinishing wood boards, and replacing glass.

Other Job Functions: Restocks supplies; rakes lawns, paints building interior and exterior. Assists in installing new shelters; installs and replaces bus stop signs.

Employment Qualifications: No record of more than two total moving violations and/or accidents in the last three years; no more than two serious accidents within the last five years; no record of operating a vehicle while under the influence (OWI); no record of revoked or suspended driver's license in last five years; no record of hit and run accidents.

Education and Experience: Successful completion of high school, HiSET or GED.

Licenses and Certificates: Ability to obtain a valid Iowa Drivers License; ability to obtain Commercial Driver's License Permit within 30 days of start date; ability to obtain Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B with passenger and airbrake endorsements) within three attempts; must maintain Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B with passenger and airbrake endorsements).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Necessary to Perform Essential Functions:
Knowledge of basic vehicle servicing and cleaning concepts and equipment; knowledge of shop safety practices.

Skill in the operation of a transit bus; skill in the operation of truck and grounds maintenance equipment; skill in the use of hand and power tools; skill in the determination of vehicle servicing needs.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep basic records.
Required Physical Activities: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, manual dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Physical Characteristics of Work: Medium work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force constantly, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 100 pounds of force occasionally to move objects.

Vision Requirements: The standard for use when the work is typically within arms reach and deals with common cleaning, vehicle, and facility and grounds maintenance equipment. Reading of odometer and other numbers, and completion of related paper work required.

Environmental Conditions: Worker is exposed to both inside and outside environmental conditions, cold, noise, vibration hazards, atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system (fumes, odors, gases), and oils. May be exposed to extreme heat.

Equipment Essential to the Job: Transit buses and other department vehicles, fuel system and oil reels, broom, cleaning chemicals (window and vinyl cleaner, soaps, etc.), pressure washer, bus washer, floor sweeper, floor scrubber; snow blower, truck with snow plow, and shovel. May require use of vacuum, ladder, lawn mower, power sander, power grinder, power drills, power saws, and basic hand tools.

Other Equipment Used on the Job:
Post driver.

Residency Requirement:
Within three months of completion of six-month probation period, must reside within an area bordered by the Boone and Story County lines on the north and south, State Highway 65 on the east; and on the west; County Road R27 north of Boone, and the Des Moines River south of Highway 30 to the Boone County line. Communities intersected by the borderline, and Zearing, shall be considered within the area.

Selection Process:
The selection process consists of an evaluation of education and experience, interview, completion of a commercial and motor vehicle record check, FMCSA PSP driver search, DOT physical and drug screen and a criminal background check, which includes a sex offender registry check. All candidates will be notified by email of their application status.

Preference may be given to applicant's possessing qualifications above the minimum.
