About This Position
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing, ensures the effective delivery of health services and maintains smooth patient flow within the service area. Plays a key role on the healthcare team by performing a range of essential tasks. Provides direct support to Nurses and Providers in patient care and treatment. Acts as a liaison between patients, families, and healthcare professionals, guiding them through the healthcare system. Recognizes the Provider as the lead authority within the service area.
Description of Responsibilities:
Clinical Support Responsibilities
- Follow all administrative and clinical nursing policies and procedures.
- Work under the direct supervision of Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs).
- Attend required in-service education programs, staff meetings, and departmental meetings.
- Maintain regular attendance and avoid excessive use of sick leave.
- Remain attentive to duties throughout the workday.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information.
Patient Care Duties
- Assist with patient admissions from the clinical waiting area to the examination room:
- Prepare patients for treatment and examination, including appropriate draping and wrapping.
- Assist in gathering external medical records from patients and/or families.
- Document relevant information in the patient’s medical record.
- Obtain vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration) and collect lab specimens (blood and urine) as directed.
- Perform vision and hearing screenings and administer first aid under supervision.
- Conduct venipuncture, specimen collection, and prepare lab and x-ray requisitions.
- Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) and apply Holter monitors as needed.
- Assist with patient discharge from the clinical area.
Clinical Environment Maintenance
- Clean and restock patient rooms after each use.
- Demonstrate infection control practices:
- Hand hygiene
- Aseptic and sterile techniques
- Adherence to isolation procedures
- Cleaning and sterilizing equipment using an autoclave
Equipment and Emergency Preparedness
- Ensure proper care and maintenance of equipment:
- Maintain emergency equipment and supplies; know their locations.
- Inspect central supply equipment for safety and functionality.
- Report repair needs promptly via email and phone.
- Respond quickly and calmly during emergencies, providing necessary materials
Based on the needs of the organization; Travel may be required to support staffing at Main Center, Butts County, Care Center Dobbs, Decatur, East Point, Forest Park, Gresham, Lovejoy, Griffin, Riverdale, Crescent Pediatrics, Norcross, Huie Elementary School-Based Clinic, Lee Street Elementary School-Based Clinic, and Henry County School as needed by the organization.
Cross-Training Statement for Medical Assistants
During orientation, the medical assistant will be cross trained laterally to ensure efficiency and proficiency in providing care for patients across the lifespan, from infants (age 0) to adults (up to age 200). The actual specialty area will be considered during training, with the expectation that the medical assistant demonstrates competency and proficiency in all relevant specialty-specific skills.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Able to relate to the health needs of the client.
- Able to read and understand health care terminology, charting, and medical procedures. Able to provide care, patience, and understanding.
- Able to communicate effectively and compassionately.
- Able to perform basic health care procedures that relate to patient care needs according to the nursing skill checklist.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1–2 years of experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
- Completion and graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program
- Certification (e.g., CMA, RMA, CCMA)
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification is required.
Typical Physical Demands:
Must possess full range of body motion, including the ability to handle and assist patients, as well as manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination. The role involves frequent standing and walking. Occasionally required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. Normal vision and hearing, or corrected to normal ranges, are essential.
Typical Working Conditions:
Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and/or other conditions common to a clinic environment.
