Job Overview:

The Occupational Therapist provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for pediatric patients with physical, developmental, and perceptual-cognitive disabilities. Operating within an outpatient setting at Children's Specialized Hospital, this role focuses on enhancing patients' functional adaptation to their environment through targeted remediation, compensation, and prevention strategies. Reporting to the Site Manager or Therapy Supervisor, you will collaborate closely with families, physicians, and volunteers to optimize patient outcomes.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy program
  • Current Occupational Therapy License issued by the State of New Jersey
  • American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider Certification
  • Twelve-week pediatric affiliation or direct pediatric clinical experience
  • Detailed knowledge of developmental theory and the effects of physical, percepto-cognitive, and psycho-social disabilities
  • Ability to evaluate performance disruptions and design effective treatment plans to minimize disabling effects
  • Good verbal and written English communication skills with tact and clinical judgment
  • Physical stamina for lifting and therapeutic handling of patients

Preferred:

  • Satisfactory completion and maintenance of the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapists (NBCOT) registration
  • Proven ability to work effectively with others and a strong commitment to improving clinical skill levels

Scheduling Requirements

  • Full-Time (Day)

Essential Functions:

  • Select, administer, and interpret designated assessment tools including comprehensive clinical histories, screenings, direct observations, and evaluations.
  • Identify and prioritize time-realistic, functional goals for the remediation, compensation, adaptation, or prevention of patient deficits.
  • Select, utilize, and evaluate the effectiveness of appropriate treatment methods based on established competency expectations.
  • Apply principles of activity analysis to grade physical, perceptual-cognitive, and psycho-social demands, creating an optimal match for the child's and family's abilities.
  • Meet competency expectations in clearly explaining clinical symptoms, long-term prognosis, and functional limitations across a variety of pediatric diagnostic groups.
  • Formulate and communicate discharge recommendations appropriate to the child and family, factoring in prognosis, role expectations, and available community resources.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams across both formal and informal oral and written formats.
  • Maintain professional communication and collaboration with referring physicians and established community contacts.
  • Assist in training, supervising, and providing clinical direction to staff, COTAs, aides, students, and volunteers as designated by competency guidelines.
  • Take proactive responsibility for seeking clinical supervision, actively contributing to department improvement plans, and effectively utilizing feedback.
  • Maintain clinical productivity standards by meeting minimum annual expected patient volumes.
  • Adhere to Universal S.A.F.E.T.Y Standards by practicing clear communication, task focus (S.T.A.R.), a questioning attitude, and thoughtful team interactions.
