Polysomnographic Technician Trainee – RWJBarnabas Health
At RWJBarnabas Health, Polysomnographic Technician Trainees play an important role in delivering exceptional sleep medicine services through compassionate patient care, technical excellence, and collaboration. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside a multidisciplinary team dedicated to diagnosing and treating sleep disorders using advanced diagnostic technology and evidence-based practices. As a Polysomnographic Technician Trainee, you will gain hands-on clinical experience while performing comprehensive sleep studies under the direct supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist. A typical day for a Polysomnographic Technician Trainee may include:
• Performing standard and complex polysomnographic recordings while monitoring and documenting physiological events throughout sleep studies
• Preparing patients for overnight sleep studies by explaining procedures, applying sensors, and ensuring patient comfort and safety
• Monitoring patients throughout diagnostic and therapeutic sleep procedures while recognizing and responding appropriately to clinical events
• Performing procedures within the scope of practice, including Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Tests (MWT), and study archiving
• Accurately documenting patient observations, equipment issues, supply needs, and any patient-related incidents during testing
• Assisting with daily sleep center operations, including answering phones, scheduling support, and completing clerical responsibilities
• Maintaining sleep laboratory equipment and ensuring diagnostic systems are functioning properly before and after patient studies
• Participating in new employee orientation and supporting a collaborative learning environment
• Performing sleep study scoring, when qualified, under the direction of the Sleep Center Manager/Coordinator
• Maintaining compliance with departmental policies, accreditation standards, patient safety guidelines, and quality improvement initiatives

To be considered for this Polysomnographic Technician Trainee opportunity:
• You have successfully completed an A-STEP Sleep Technologist Training Program or are a graduate of an accredited sleep study program.
• You hold a New Jersey Polysomnographic Technician License.
• You are a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Registered EEG Technician with sleep experience, preferred.
• You maintain current BLS or CPR Certification.
• You are able to work under the direct supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist.
• You are committed to obtaining your Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) credential within 12 months of hire.
