What You’ll Do

As an Operating Room Assistant, you will report to the Director, Patient Care Services/Supervisor in the assigned area. You will provide technical support services to the surgical team. You will assist in the peri-operative care in a technical support staff function; communicates with surgeons, anesthesiologists and surgical services staff, interdepartmental communication, Sterile Processing, Distribution, Lab, Blood Bank, Pharmacy, and Housekeeping.

Operating Room Assistant Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepare operating rooms for surgical procedures by gathering equipment, sterile supplies, positioning devices, and verifying case cart completeness.
  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot a variety of surgical equipment, including specialty tables, microscopes, and related operating room technology.
  • Support operating room workflow by answering phones, managing communications, ordering supplies, and maintaining inventory levels.
  • Maintain sterile supply inventory, stock designated areas, and ensure proper storage and handling of medical and surgical equipment.
  • Assist with patient transport, lifting, positioning, surgical preparation, and application of casts and splints under clinical supervision.
  • Support patient care activities by attaching monitoring equipment, assisting with non-medicated IV solutions, managing drainage systems, and following patient identification and safety protocols.
  • Clean, disinfect, and prepare operating rooms between procedures and perform terminal cleaning in accordance with infection prevention standards.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized surgical environment, including equipment cleaning, waste disposal, linen management, and floor care.
  • Transport supplies, equipment, blood products, and other materials throughout the surgical services department as needed.
  • Monitor supply levels, coordinate reordering, and ensure availability of equipment and materials required for patient care.
  • Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges within the perioperative environment.
  • Support onboarding and training of new staff on operating room procedures and departmental workflows.
  • Adhere to aseptic technique, infection prevention practices, patient safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, mandatory education, competency assessments, and quality improvement activities.
  • Maintain required certifications, organizational compliance standards, and schedule flexibility, including overtime and on-call support as needed.

What You Bring

As an Operating Room Assistant, this position requires successful completion of a practical and written HeartSaver CPR examination with a minimum passing score of 90% prior to the end of the introductory period. The individual must possess a foundational understanding of safety protocols, departmental and hospital procedures, and emergency disaster response guidelines. Knowledge of anatomy, surgical procedures, aseptic and isolation techniques, postmortem care, and the maintenance and handling of surgical supplies and equipment is essential. The role also requires the ability to read and write at a level sufficient to accurately interpret physician preference cards and clearly order case carts and supplies. Strong verbal communication skills are necessary to effectively interact with patients and understand instructions from nursing staff. Additionally, the candidate must be able to work independently, prioritize responsibilities, adapt to interruptions in a fast-paced environment, and maintain positive, cooperative working relationships with nursing staff and other healthcare personnel.

Required Qualifications

  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Must be a minimum of 17 years of age.
  • Successful completion of a planned instructional operating room sponsored orientation; and one year of clinical experience in an accredited hospital with operating room experience preferred.
