The Health, Safety and Environment Technician I will assist in a supporting role to the HSE Department with the daily operations of our health, safety and environment programs, policies, procedures, and training requirements.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Environment

  • Support the management of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, used oil, and other environmental materials in compliance with regulations
  • Conduct hazardous waste removal and decontamination of facility equipment as needed
  • Prepare drums for reuse or recycling, including triple-rinsing and de-heading
  • Assist with field sampling and environmental monitoring under supervision
  • Collect, transport, inventory, and label regulated and non-regulated waste materials for off-site disposal
  • Provide departments with HSE-approved containers and proper waste labeling upon request
  • Maintain detailed records of environmental tasks and inspections
  • Identify and report non-compliance issues or hazardous conditions to management promptly
  • Conduct routine inspections of waste accumulation areas and emergency response equipment
  • Support field sampling and equipment monitoring for NPDES and groundwater remediation programs
  • Assist in operations at the Waste Water Treatment Facility as needed

Safety

  • Assist in the delivery of health, safety, and environmental training programs
  • Under supervision, help conduct industrial hygiene surveys (e.g., noise, air quality, chemical exposure)
  • Inspect safety and emergency equipment including:
    • Fire protection systems
    • Emergency showers and eyewash stations
    • Material handling equipment (cranes, forklifts, etc.)
    • First aid kits
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety and inspection records
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of workspaces and equipment
  • Assist with incident reporting and investigations, following direct guidance
  • Support safety efforts at other local facilities during occasional travel
  • Participate in the CHI Safety Committee when needed
  • Serve as a proactive advocate for workplace safety and environmental compliance across the organization

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1-year experience in an HSE capacity preferred, but not required
  • OSHA 30 HR General Industry and/or HAZWOPER 40HR preferred, but not required
  • Strong desire to promote workplace safety and support the HSE Department initiatives
  • Ability, and desire, to learn in a training environment until proficient in daily tasks
  • Basic mathematics, reading, writing and oral communication skills
  • Good organizational skills for work load and file management
  • Ability to keep information confidential
  • Have considerable concentration on variable or complex tasks, often under fluctuating work schedules and time lines.
  • Ability to handle deadlines effectively
  • Ability to research, interpret and apply regulatory guidance (EPA, OSHA, DOT, etc.) to address health, safety and environmental issues under the guidance of senior team members
  • Ability to plan, communicate and execute procedures
  • Ability to travel locally (domestic, typically within the Pacific Northwest); not typical
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Must meet International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) as a U.S. Person
