JOB TITLE: Emergency Department Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Emergency Department Manager oversees the daily operations, clinical performance, and strategic direction of the Emergency Department at our critical access hospital. This role ensures highquality patient care, regulatory compliance, staff development, and operational efficiency while embodying the organization’s core values: Build Trust, Obsess Over Excellence, Lead Innovation, and Deepen Connections. The Manager collaborates closely with clinical teams, hospital leadership, and community partners to deliver exceptional emergency services to the region.

  • Ensure compliance with EMTALA, state regulations, and hospital policies through ethical and transparent practices.

  • Monitor clinical performance, patient outcomes, and quality metrics to ensure highquality emergency care.

  • Optimize staffing, workflows, and resource utilization to maintain timely, efficient patient throughput.

  • Lead quality initiatives, audits, and process reviews to drive continuous improvement.

  • Oversee onboarding, training, competency validation, and ongoing education for ED staff.

  • Maintain accurate, uptodate policies, procedures, and clinical documentation standards.

  • Implement new approaches to emergency care delivery that enhance safety, efficiency, and patient experience.

  • Leverage digital tools, EHR enhancements, and data analytics to improve department performance.

  • Anticipate operational challenges and develop forwardthinking solutions.

  • Lead planning and response efforts for disaster readiness, masscasualty events, and community emergencies.

Deepen Connections We build strong relationships with our patients, their families and partners in the communities we serve.

  • Collaborate with EMS agencies, public health partners, and regional hospitals to strengthen emergency care coordination.

  • Ensure compassionate, clear communication during highstress situations.

  • Work closely with inpatient units, ancillary services, and hospital leadership to support seamless patient transitions.

  • Promote a supportive, inclusive, and missiondriven culture within the Emergency Department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrates the ability to motivate, mentor, and develop clinical and support staff; fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning; effectively manages conflict and builds highperforming teams.

  • Applies strong clinical judgment in fastpaced, highacuity situations; supports staff with realtime guidance; ensures evidencebased practice and safe patient care standards.

  • Communicates clearly and professionally with staff, ED Medical Director, providers, patients, families, and community partners; adapts communication style to diverse audiences; ensures transparency and alignment across the department.

  • Uses data, metrics, and analytics to identify trends, evaluate performance, and drive operational and clinical improvements; translates insights into actionable strategies.

  • Maintains deep understanding of EMTALA, CMS Conditions of Participation, state regulations, and accreditation standards; ensures department practices meet or exceed all requirements.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of disaster response, masscasualty protocols, and community emergency coordination; leads drills and preparedness planning.

  • Skilled in staffing models, resource allocation, workflow optimization, and budget stewardship; ensures efficient, safe, and costeffective ED operations.

  • Works effectively with inpatient units, ancillary departments, EMS, and external partners to support seamless patient transitions and coordinated care.

  • Utilizes electronic health records, digital tools, and clinical systems to support documentation accuracy, operational efficiency, and quality improvement.

  • Demonstrates empathy, selfawareness, and strong interpersonal skills; maintains composure under pressure; supports staff and patients during highstress situations.

  • Anticipates future needs, identifies opportunities for innovation, and aligns departmental goals with organizational priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) or related healthcare field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree in nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field.

Required Licensure:

  • Current RN license in the state of Washington (or ability to obtain).

Specialty Certification:

  • ACLS and PALS required.

  • TNCC required within three months of employment.

  • CEN or related specialty certification preferred.

Required Experience:

  • 3–5 years of clinical emergency nursing experience.

  • 2+ years of leadership or charge nurse experience in an emergency setting.

  • Experience in a critical access or rural hospital preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Office and clinical settings with potential exposure to patient care areas.

  • Flexibility to work extended hours as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities.

  • May require occasional travel between facility locations.

Benefit Eligibility Requirements - Employees regularly scheduled at least 20 hours per week.

Employee Dependents - Your legal spouse or domestic partner; dependent children until age 26.

Waiting Period - 1st of the month from the date of hire.
