Position Summary

The 1st Shift Paint Supervisor (Monday–Thursday, 6:30 AM – 4:30 PM) is responsible for leading the daily operations of the powder coating department to ensure the safe, efficient, and timely finishing of fabricated metal components that meet customer specifications and quality standards.

This position provides direct leadership to paint line employees, oversees pretreatment, powder application, curing, and material flow, and promotes a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement. The Paint Supervisor works closely with Production, Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, Shipping, and Supply Chain to ensure production schedules are met while maximizing throughput, minimizing rework, and maintaining superior finish quality.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Supervise, coach, train, and develop powder coat paint line employees to achieve daily production and quality goals.
  • Plan, assign, and coordinate work to meet production schedules and customer delivery requirements.
  • Oversee all powder coating operations, including pretreatment, cleaning, masking, powder application, curing, inspection, and packaging.
  • Ensure proper operation of the conveyorized paint line, spray booths, curing ovens, and associated finishing equipment.
  • Maintain compliance with company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and environmental requirements related to powder coating operations.
  • Monitor coating thickness, adhesion, color consistency, gloss, cure quality, and overall finish appearance to ensure compliance with customer specifications.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and housekeeping of paint equipment, booths, ovens, filters, reclaim systems, and work areas.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance to minimize downtime and ensure preventive maintenance is completed.
  • Train employees on paint application techniques, equipment operation, quality standards, safety procedures, and standard work instructions.
  • Conduct daily production meetings to communicate safety topics, production goals, quality expectations, and department performance.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, Scheduling, and Materials teams to resolve production issues and support new product launches.
  • Investigate quality issues, customer concerns, and non-conformances while implementing corrective and preventive actions.
  • Monitor labor utilization, throughput, scrap, rework, and downtime while driving continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Promote Lean Manufacturing principles, including 5S, waste reduction, standardized work, and process optimization.
  • Maintain accurate production reporting, labor tracking, inventory transactions, and documentation within the ERP system.
  • Monitor employee attendance, performance, and development through coaching, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Perform other supervisory duties as assigned.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of manufacturing experience, with experience in powder coating, industrial painting, metal finishing, or related manufacturing processes.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory or team leadership experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of powder coating processes, pretreatment systems, curing ovens, and finishing equipment.
  • Strong understanding of quality inspection methods for painted products.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and environmental compliance related to industrial finishing operations.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and ERP/manufacturing software systems.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Engineering, Industrial Technology, Business Management, or a related field.
  • Experience supervising a conveyorized powder coating operation.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, or Continuous Improvement methodologies.
  • Experience with ISO 9001 quality systems.
  • Familiarity with paint line maintenance, preventive maintenance programs, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings, finish specifications, and customer coating requirements.
  • Forklift certification or willingness to become certified.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.
  • Frequently lift, push, pull, or move materials weighing up to 40 pounds; occasionally up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and work around overhead conveyor systems.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to heat, dust, powder coating materials, noise, and moving equipment.
  • Must be able to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators when required, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and protective clothing.
  • Ability to distinguish colors accurately for paint verification, quality inspection, and color matching.
