Job Description

Job Summary:

The Material Handler uses overhead cranes and rigging equipment and fork lifts to load, unload, and reposition material and equipment in the warehouse. In this role, the Material Handler coordinates with other shipping, receiving, and production personnel to set priorities and schedule activities.

The Material Handler receives information from shipping or traffic personnel or, at the direction of others, examines loading orders or other documents for material identification. The incumbent then locates the material specified and may, at the direction of others, determine the quantity of material to be shipped through counting, weighing, or measuring techniques. In some cases, the incumbent is required to separate material in existing bundles or other packaging and coordinate with others for repackaging. At the direction of others, the incumbent may personally perform repackaging. Once material is appropriately identified, tagged, and packaged by others, the Material Handler uses overhead cranes and fork lifts to load material on trucks. The incumbent may coordinate with Traffic personnel to determine loading priorities or special loading requirements.

The Material Handler receives information from receiving personnel regarding unloading requirements for incoming material and uses overhead cranes and fork lifts to unload material and transport the material to the appropriate warehouse location where the incumbent uses standard procedures for stacking and storing. The incumbent, either through their own actions or by coordination with others, insures that tags are generated and applied to material before storing.

The Material Handler may, at the direction of others, complete documentation regarding location codes relative to material loaded, unloaded, or relocated and either personally enter this information into the Company’s systems by computer or pass the documentation to others for completion.

The Material Handler responds to production personnel to locate and load material onto production equipment. This function involves the location of appropriate material as well as proper lifting and transport procedures. Similarly, the incumbent is called on to transport material after processing or between processing steps and properly position it for shipping or further processing. In some cases, the incumbent uses cranes, fork lifts, and other equipment to reposition heavy tooling and assist production or maintenance personnel with its installation or removal. At the direction of others, the incumbent obtains samples for testing by others.

The Material Handler is required to be capable of performing all essential job functions of Packager and possesses all Packager knowledge, skills, abilities, and qualifications.

The Material Handler performs all duties according to location policies and procedures, manufacturer instructions, and within accepted safety rules and practices. The incumbent is aware of all applicable emergency procedures and may be called upon to direct others in these procedures. The incumbent is responsible for the general cleanliness and housekeeping of the applicable work area. These responsibilities insure a clean, clutter free, safe working environment. The incumbent is also called on to provide on-the-job instruction in the essential functions of the Material Handler job for the purpose of developing the skills of others.
