Job Description

Corporate Accountant - General Ledger

Coakley & Williams Construction (CWC) is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Corporate General Ledger Accountant to join our Accounting & Finance team. As an Accountant with CWC you will play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records and supporting the monthly financial close process. The GL Accountant will prepare journal entries, reconcile balance sheet accounts, assist with financial reporting, and support accounting operations across multiple business units.

The ideal candidate possesses strong accounting fundamentals, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced construction environment. This individual will work closely with accounting, project accounting, payroll, and operational teams to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the Company's financial information.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
General Ledger Accounting
  • Prepare and post recurring and non-recurring journal entries, including accruals, prepaid expenses, allocations, and reclassifications.
  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and ensure transactions are recorded accurately and timely.
  • Reconcile assigned balance sheet and income statement accounts monthly.
  • Research and resolve account discrepancies and reconciling items.
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations and cash account analysis.
  • Maintain supporting schedules for prepaid expenses, fixed assets, debt, leases, and other assigned accounts.
Month-End and Year-End Close
  • Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes.
  • Prepare account analyses and supporting schedules for financial reporting.
  • Review transactions for proper coding and compliance with company accounting policies.
  • Support timely completion of all close-related activities.
  • Assist in preparing internal financial statements and management reporting packages.
  • Help identify accounting trends, issues, and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Support budgeting and forecasting activities as assigned.
Audit & Compliance
  • Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation for external auditors.
  • Assist with annual financial statement audits and tax filings.
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), company policies, and internal controls.
  • Support implementation and monitoring of accounting policies and procedures.
Process Improvement
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, and efficiencies.
  • Assist with system implementations, testing, and process documentation.
  • Participate in special projects and departmental initiatives.
Other Duties
  • Collaborate effectively with project managers, project accountants, payroll, accounts payable, and operational teams.
  • Perform other finance and accounting duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • 2-5 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Experience with construction ERP systems is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and general ledger accounting.
  • Experience preparing journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reports.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience working with ERP/accounting systems.
  • Corporate general ledger accounting experience preferred.
  • Construction industry accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • CPA certification or active progress toward CPA licensure preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

This position regularly requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching above and below shoulder level. The employee may occasionally be required to lift, carry, or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
Work may be performed in office and active construction-site environments. Construction-site work may involve exposure to heavy equipment, moving machinery, dust, noise, hazardous materials, uneven surfaces, and varying weather conditions. Required personal protective equipment must be worn when applicable.

Schedule:
This is a full-time position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week. 4 days per week from our Bethesda, MD office, 1 remote day.

In accordance with the Maryland Wage Transparency Law, the base salary range for this position is $80,000-$100,000 annually. The determination of salary is based on the candidate's individual professional experience, qualifications, education, skills, training, and other job-related factors.
