Medical Lab Technician (MLT) – Microbiology Details
Essential Job Duties:
- Process clinical specimens: Perform pre-analytical processing of clinical bacterial specimens according to established laboratory procedures. Evaluate specimens and test requests for accuracy and completeness, verify specimen labeling and identification, confirm the correct specimen type, and prioritize specimens appropriately.
- Perform microbiology testing: Operate laboratory instrumentation including automated Gram stainers, blood culture instruments, molecular platforms, and manual and automated identification and susceptibility testing systems.
- Interpret and report test results: Interpret culture plates, set up appropriate confirmatory testing, and accurately enter results into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Handle and ship specimens: Follow established protocols for handling and processing specimens and prepare and ship Category A and Category B dangerous goods according to applicable requirements.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies: Aseptically prepare reagents for pre-analytical testing, clean and disinfect laboratory equipment, locate patient specimens, put supplies away, and monitor inventory levels.
- Perform clerical and administrative duties: Complete weekly reports, fill supply orders, file paperwork, answer telephone calls, and perform other clerical duties specific to the Microbiology department.
- Maintain quality assurance and epidemiology records: Compile quality assurance and epidemiology reports and maintain required documentation according to established laboratory procedures.
- Provide department coverage: Work independently and as part of a team to support department operations. May be required to perform additional duties or work additional hours to accommodate technical staffing fluctuations.
- Work flexible schedules: In addition to daytime hours, rotate weekend shifts and provide holiday coverage as required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Associate degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; or High School graduate or equivalent and have successfully completed an official military medical laboratory procedures program of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (laboratory technician).
- ASCP, AMT, or NCA certification or eligibility preferred. Must meet CLIA 1988 requirements for testing personnel performing moderately complex testing.
- Must be organized, efficient, self-motivated, reliable, and eager to learn new procedures, duties, and instrumentation.
- Familiarity with sterile techniques, Biosafety Level II protocols, and specimen collection criteria is desirable but not required.
- Strong communication, computer, and organizational skills.
- Flexible team player who can multitask and work accurately in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic knowledge of science and medical practices; able to lift stock boxes.
