Job Description
Job Summary:
A Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible for delivering comprehensive respiratory therapy services, including the assessment, treatment, management, diagnostic evaluation, and care of all patients, from newborn to geriatric, with cardiopulmonary deficiencies and abnormalities. This role involves consulting with healthcare providers and offering guidance, education and technical support to medical, nursing and other staff members. In collaboration with leadership the therapist ensures the delivery of high quality patient care by adhering to established care standards and executing provider orders all while supporting the vision and mission of Northern Inyo Healthcare District (NIHD).
The Respiratory Care Practitioner is expected to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality in all areas involving patients, and their related hospital business. The Respiratory Therapist conducts hospital business in an ethical and lawful manner, and is willing to report any knowledge of real or potential fraud or abuse according to the NIHD Compliance Code of Conduct. Job Relationships:
- Reports directly to Manager of Cardiopulmonary Services
- Reports indirectly to District administration.
- Clinical oversight and clinical review provided by Medical Director.
- Works closely with hospital district leadership departments as well as internal and external customers
- Collaborates with all members of the Health Care Team in the coordination of patient care
Occupational Hazards:
Works in the general hospital setting. May be exposed to blood, body fluids, or tissues as well as patients in varying stages of infectious states.
Samples of Duties:
- Performs direct patient care in accordance to performance standards of the department for the specific needs of the defined cardiopulmonary patient populations
- Administer medications and has knowledge of actions, route of administration, dosage, and side effects
- Checks provider’s orders to ensure correct test has been ordered
- Responds to emergencies or codes immediately and insures the adequate maintenance of airways and ventilation during cardio-pulmonary resuscitations. Performs in a calm and professional manner.
- Ability to perform blood gases, run sample and report in a timely manner
- Maintain blood gas analyzer
- Assist with EKG’s
- Knowledge in the patient charge system within the Respiratory Care Department.
- Consistently completes patient billing correctly and in a timely manner.
- Coordinates care effectively with Nursing Care Team, Medical Staff and Cardiopulmonary
- Ensures patients are not left unattended and appropriate safety measures are followed
- Cleans equipment per manufacture recommendations
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- The Mission, Vision, and Values of Northern Inyo Healthcare District;
- NIHD policies and procedures, including Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, and Confidentiality standards;
- NIHD safety policies and procedures, including the Rainbow Chart, Employee Health, and Infection Prevention standards;
- Understands the importance of using 2 patient identifiers to verify correct patient
- Communicates with co-workers and patients in a professional and respectful manner
Skills/Abilities to:
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with NIHD staff and the public;
- Establish and maintain professional working relationships with NIHD staff at all levels as well as the public;
- Develop and maintain a high degree of maturity, integrity, and good judgement.
- Gains patient cooperation by reducing anxieties through thorough explanations of procedures and answering all patient questions
- Utilize Electronic Health Records competently
- Basic Computer Skills including the ability to use Microsoft Office and Microsoft Outlook products
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience:
- None
Education:
- Associated Degree in an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
Certification:
- Current California Respiratory Care Practitioner License
- Registered as a Respiratory Therapist by the NBRC
- BLS
- NRP within 6 months of hire and on-going
- PALS within 6 months of hire and on-going
- ACLS within 6 months of hire and on-going
Preferred:
Experience:
- Prior experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist in an acute care environment
Education:
- Bachelors of Science degree
Certification:
- NPS
- ACCS
- CPFT or RPFT
12 hour all shifts
