About Genex Systems

Genex Systems is a Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) headquartered in Newport News, VA. Founded in 2000 at NASA Langley Research Center, Genex has spent 25+ years delivering scientific research and engineering, information technology, and mission support services across the federal government. Our track record is defined by high quality, cost-effective, and timely performance across numerous contracts, earning exceptional CPARS ratings and commendations.

Every wind tunnel test, lab experiment, and flight simulation at NASA Langley depends on buildings and systems that work. As our Small Construction Project Coordinator, you'll own small construction projects from the first request to final closeout, keeping the facilities behind NASA's aeronautics and space research running and improving.

About the Work

NASA Langley in Hampton, Virginia, is home to more than 3,400 people and some of the country's most specialized research facilities, including the National Transonic Facility, a pressurized cryogenic wind tunnel, and the 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel. The Center Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering II (CMOE II) contract keeps this campus running, covering facility engineering, construction support, maintenance, and utilities across Langley's research and institutional buildings. Genex Systems is part of the CMOE II team. You'll join Genex's IDIQ & Construction Services Directorate supporting CMOE II and report directly to the Program Manager.

What You'll Do

  • Manage multiple small construction projects at the same time, each at a different phase, from initial request through planning, execution, and closeout.
  • Build independent construction cost estimates using tools such as RSMeans Construction Cost Data.
  • Read engineered drawings and specifications to define project scope, and help develop drawings and specs for new work.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, support the contract award process, provide minor construction management, verify work on site and track schedules and costs against the plan.
  • Serve as the main point of contact with the NASA customer, keeping them updated throughout each project.
  • Close out projects by finalizing all required deliverables.
  • Write clear, professional letters, correspondence, and reports.

What You'll Need (Required)

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Eight (8) years of combined education and experience in construction, construction project management, or a related field. For example, two years of college coursework in engineering or a related discipline plus six years of related experience.
  • Strong knowledge of construction trades, with an emphasis on mechanical and HVAC systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineered drawings and specifications.
  • Experience preparing construction cost estimates.
  • Working knowledge of project management principles and methods, and the ability to keep several projects on schedule with little oversight.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Project.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presenting information with visual aids.
  • A valid REAL ID compliant form of identification (see Additional Requirements).

Nice to Have (Preferred)

  • Direct experience with building or systems construction management.
  • Hands-on experience with RSMeans Construction Cost Data.
  • Working proficiency in AutoCAD or similar computer-aided drafting software.
  • Experience with a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) such as IBM Maximo.
  • Experience supporting federal facilities or government contracts.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range: $65,000 to $75,000

This range is a good-faith estimate of what Genex intends to offer at the time of posting. Actual pay depends on factors such as responsibilities, education, experience, skills, internal equity, market data, and relevant laws.

Genex Systems offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • Employer-paid life insurance and dependent life insurance
  • Short-term and long-term disability
  • Paid time off (PTO) and paid federal holidays
  • Tuition assistance programs

Location & Work Arrangement

  • Location: NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia
  • Arrangement: Fully on-site. No remote or hybrid option.
  • Schedule: Full-time. Expect overtime or work outside the normal schedule about 5% to 20% of the time.
  • Time split: About 65% in an office setting and 35% at test facilities and active construction sites. Occasional travel between the office and facilities across the center.

Additional Requirements

Citizenship and access

  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • NASA enforces REAL ID requirements for all visitors and badge holders. You'll need a REAL ID compliant form of identification to access the center. See the list of accepted documents at www.dhs.gov/real-id.
  • No security clearance is required.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a background check and a drug test.

Work environment and physical requirements

  • Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety training will be provided.

Safety and conduct

  • You'll follow all safety policies and procedures and prepare a Safe Plan of Action (SPA) for each task. The SPA is a company tool used to prevent incidents, accidents, and injuries.
  • You'll work closely with team members and with people at every level of Genex and the NASA client organization, so professional conduct and teamwork are essential.
