Jail Deputy (Part-Time)
Sawyer County is seeking dedicated and responsible individuals to join our team as Jail Officers. In this role, you will play a vital part in maintaining safety and security within our correctional facility while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
These positions require working a wide variety of hours, including rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays. Jail Officers perform numerous duties related to the daily operation of the jail.

Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Knowledge of computers and Windows operating systems
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to multi-task and respond quickly and effectively in stressful situations
- Must maintain a high degree of confidentiality
- At least 18 years of age
- Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License
- No felony or domestic abuse-related convictions

Responsibilities:
- Ensure inmate and departmental safety
- Maintain continuity between shifts
- Administer routine medical care and dispense medication
- Perform other duties as assigned

Wage: $22.68 at start, $23.94 at 6 months, $25.20 at 1 year.
The selection procedure includes an oral interview, written test, background check, psychological evaluation, pre-employment physical, and drug screening.
Chosen candidates must be willing to obtain Wisconsin State Jailer Certification, sponsored by the employer. Law enforcement officer certification is not required.

TITLE: Jail Deputy

DEPARTMENT: Sheriff’s Department

SUPERVISOR: Jail Administrator / Jail Sergeant

The purpose of this position is to assist the Sheriff in meeting the requirements of Wisconsin State Statute 302 regarding the operation of jail facilities.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Jail Deputies support the mission of the Sawyer County Jail, which is to protect the public through the constructive management of offenders placed in its charge. The jailer is responsible for all aspects of the booking, housing, and releasing of inmates in the Sawyer County Jail in compliance with the Policies and Procedures Manual established for the jail operations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for the security of the Jail by enforcing and carrying out operational regulations and policies.

Book prisoners according to protocol, including fingerprinting, search, inventory property, gather information, photograph, and issue items.

Oversee the cleanliness of the Jail.

Deliver medications to inmates.

Prepare daily reports as required.

Determine the release date of inmates and ensure they are released on that date.

Enforce the Jail and Huber rules and prepare reports on violations.

Deliver canteen to the inmates.

Receive bond payments, canteen money, Huber and Electronic Monitor Fees and receipt them properly.

Assist in placing inmates on Electronic Monitor and act as Electronic Monitor Officer on assigned inmates.

Release and intake eligible Huber inmates.

Assist Transport and Court Deputies in the performance of their duties.

Other daily tasks as required by law, policy, regulations, or other orders.

Other specific or special assignments as designated by the Jail Administrator or Jail Sergeant.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Must be 18 years of age, have a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License, have no felony or domestic abuse related convictions, and obtain Wisconsin State Jail certification and TTY Basic Certification. The person in this position must be able to work both as part of a team and independently. Must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions and follow established protocol. A Jail Deputy must successfully pass urinalysis for drug and alcohol testing.

Must be able to walk, talk, see and hear; work on feet for long periods of time; bend and reach; wear self-contained breathing apparatus; routinely lift up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds; and have the physical ability to restrain and subdue prisoners. Jail Deputies are exposed to infectious diseases, blood and other body fluids, and naked bodies.
