JOB SUMMARY:
The Registered Respiratory Therapist provides treatment and diagnostic respiratory services with patients and families in all clinical areas of WRMC including intensive care units, emergency department, general care, perioperative, procedure areas, and others as required. This position requires clinical assessment skills and the ability to make appropriate clinical decisions and modify care according to clinical protocols. This position requires superb communication skills and the ability to work with the inter-disciplinary team to ensure high quality patient care. The Respiratory Therapist acts as resource to physicians and health care professionals ensuring orders are concurrent with policies and procedures. This position may function as a “Charge Therapist” with responsibility for ensuring adequate number of respiratory care staff to cover the patient care areas.
This position may assist with writing departmental policies and procedures, development of protocols, orientation and education and training for respiratory care staff, students and health care professionals. THIS IS A PRN position with various shifts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform a comprehensive patient assessment and review of the patient’s medical record to recommend and provide clinically indicated therapy with the patient and family.
- Perform and/or teach airway clearance and volume expansion modalities for the purpose of assisting the patient in the mobilization of bronchial secretions or increasing lung volume.
- Perform procedures related to the care and maintenance of an airway.
- Initiate and maintain non-invasive and invasive ventilator support and the associated critical care duties required for such modalities.
- Demonstrates competency for invasive arterial blood gas draw and understands the possible complications and contraindications associated with the procedure.
- Demonstrates competency for ABG interpretation and relay results to physician according to policy.
- Initiate and maintain medical gas therapy including oxygen and heliox.
- Perform and/or teach aerosolized medication. Understands the purpose and the possible side effects associated.
- Perform responsibilities of shift-lead when necessary
- Performs EKG’s and sends results to physicians who request them according to department procedures
- Orient new staff to the workings of the department and services provided.
- Assist with training students within the different disciplines.
- Assist in writing or revising policies and procedures, education and competencies.
- Performs complete and accurate documentation including charging within the electronic medical record.
- Follows HIPAA guideline patient rights policy; complies with the compliance program.
- Attends education in-service programs to maintain professional competency. Obtains appropriate hospital-specific education and training. Keep up to date with departmental information
- Serve on committees as requested by the Director or Manager.
- Performs special projects as assigned by the Director or Manager.

- Interprets selective laboratory and diagnostic tests

- Basic computer skills
Experience
- Recent Respiratory Therapist experience preferred
Education
- Graduate of a COARC accredited School for Respiratory Therapy.
License/Certifications
- Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) in the State of Texas.
- RRT Credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care for individuals with greater than six months’ post-graduation.
- RRT eligible new graduates must obtain the RRT credential within 6 months of hire date.
- BLS Certified from AHA or ARC
- ACLS Certified from AHA or ARC within 60 days from hire date.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification required for any Charge or Supervisor RT; credential within 6 months of hire date for all others.
- PALS Certified required for any Charge or Supervisor RT; credential within 6 months of hire date for all others.
