Position Overview

The Technical Services Intern works alongside the Technical Services team to support product testing, data analysis, laboratory activities, and customer technical support. This position provides hands-on experience with cement, concrete, and aggregate materials while introducing the intern to the role technical services plays in product performance and customer support.

The intern will gain practical experience preparing and testing mortar cubes, concrete mixes, and aggregate materials, analyzing and documenting test results, and assisting experienced technical professionals with customer questions and technical concerns.

What You'll Do

  • Learn and apply established testing methods, procedures, and equipment under the guidance of Technical Services staff.
  • Assist with preparing cement, concrete, mortar, and aggregate materials for laboratory testing.
  • Assist with mortar cube preparation, concrete mixes, and aggregate material testing.
  • Perform laboratory tests under the guidance of experienced Technical Services personnel.
  • Collect, organize, document, and assist with analyzing laboratory and product testing data.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate records of laboratory testing, test results, and related technical documentation.
  • Support Technical Services staff in responding to customer inquiries and technical questions.
  • Assist with researching and troubleshooting product performance or other technical concerns raised by customers.
  • Learn how laboratory testing and technical data are used to evaluate product performance and support customer needs.
  • Participate in technical projects involving cement, concrete, aggregates, and other construction materials.
  • Work collaboratively with Technical Services, Quality, Sales, Operations, and other team members to support product and customer needs.
  • Maintain laboratory work areas and equipment in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
  • Follow all Company and plant safety policies, rules, and procedures, as well as applicable MSHA regulations.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately follow testing procedures and document results.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an interest in understanding material and product performance.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with Technical Services personnel, customers, and other team members.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to accurately collect, organize, and maintain testing and technical data.
  • Ability to manage assigned responsibilities with appropriate independence and accountability.
  • Self-motivated with a willingness to learn new testing methods, materials, equipment, and technical concepts.

Education & Experience

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program in Concrete Industry Management (CIM), Materials Science, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, or a related scientific, technical, or engineering field.
  • Previous laboratory, construction materials, concrete, cement, aggregate, or technical experience is helpful but not required.
  • Previous coursework or experience involving material testing, concrete, cement, or laboratory procedures is preferred but not required.

Other Qualifications

  • Mechanical aptitude with an interest in laboratory and materials testing equipment.
  • Interest in cement, concrete, aggregates, materials science, or the construction materials industry.
  • Interest in applying technical knowledge to product performance and customer needs.
  • Ability and willingness to work in laboratory, production, and field environments as needed.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and work safely around active production operations.
  • Commitment to following all Company safety policies, procedures, and applicable MSHA regulations.
