JOB CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY
Positions assigned to this class are responsible for planning, scheduling activities, and providing updates in support of the Town's planning projects
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level professional classification in the planning job family. This is the first professional level classification in a career progression in the planning series. Demonstrates specific knowledge and follows established practices and processes. Work is designed to provide initial experience and training in an assignment requiring previous formal learning or equivalent training. Work is performed under the supervision of a more senior professional.
The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks will vary over time depending on the Town’s needs.
- Reviews planning projects and building permits for conformance with design standards and adherence to codes and ordinances; compiles reviewer comments; prepares disposition letters to applicants.
- Provides customer service to residents and applicants regarding zoning information, design information, miscellaneous issues, and related items.
- Leads technical review committee meetings for assigned projects; assists in scheduling neighborhood meetings.
- Reviews new and renewing business licenses.
- Prepares and presents planning project reports to various boards, commissions and leadership.
- Performs field inspections.
- Serves as project manager for the receipt, coordination and dissemination of information.
- Researches planning related inquiries and fulfills related public record requests.
- Updates planning website.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Geography, or a related field and 2 years of planning experience; Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties of the position may be considered.
KNOWLEDGE
- Urban planning principles, methods and practices;
- Applicable Federal, state and local laws, codes, ordinances, rules and regulations;
- Standard office equipment including the computer and programs relevant to the performance of applicable duties and responsibilities;
- Customer service principles and practices.
- Giving public presentations;
- Applying modern urban planning principles and practices;
- Managing assigned projects and programs;
- Resolving conflict;
- Analyzing data, drawing logical conclusions and make sound decisions and recommendations based on findings;
- Interpreting, applying and explaining applicable Federal, state and local laws, codes, ordinances, rules and regulations;
- Using computers and related software applications;
- Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and other interested parties sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
