Acts as the patient’s personal representative. Arranges for the efficient, orderly and accurate evaluation of a patient’s financial situation as it pertains to his/her health care services.
Duties & Responsibilities
- As the patient’s personal representative, the Financial Counselor has the ability to file a Medicaid application on the patient’s behalf. This benefit also allows the Counselor the ability to request other pertinent, sensitive documents on behalf of the patient.
- Must be knowledgeable/up to date with the guidelines and regulations governing all state and federal sponsorship agencies.
- Interviews self-pay, underinsured and medically indigent patients to determine the best program that may provide financial assistance with hospital/medical bills. This includes SC, GA & NC Medicaid, Social Security disability, SC Victim Assistance, COBRA eligibility, etc.
- Manages the AnMed CAFA Financial Assistance Program process.
- Assesses and evaluates the financial needs of patients by completion of the screening process. Responsible for obtaining applications and supporting financial documentation.
- Required documentation includes the patient’s sensitive financial information (bank statements, tax forms, social security card, etc.).
- Approves, denies or suspends the application for additional information.
- Works with the cancer center representative to expedite CAFA applications for PET scan patients.
- Ensure that all information is scanned into the hospital’s system.
- Items include the screening sheets, applications, and approval/denial letter.
- Documents hospital system account with the appropriate action codes and change financial class, as needed and complete the account with detailed notes.
- Responsible for completing work queues in EPIC.
- Adjusts account balances as required based on the assistance program (CAFA, Free Clinic, and HOP Program) and the guidelines.
- Provides Medical documentation/records from HPF for Social Security disability patients.
- Responsible for some cashiering functions such as collecting deposits, if assistance is not available.
- Attends continuing education classes including SOAR training to assist homeless patients who may qualify for SSI.
- Attends training provided by Attorney group related to Medicaid applications.
- Works with designated attorneys to resolve denials or obtain additional documentation.
- Performs additional duties assigned to meet AnMed Health’s needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree.
- Prior training experience.
- Basic medical terminology.
