Development Director - More Perfect Union

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Development Director - More Perfect Union based in the United States.

This role offers the opportunity to lead fundraising strategy for a rapidly growing mission-driven media and advocacy organization.
The Development Director will play a key role in expanding major gift programs, strengthening donor relationships, and building long-term financial sustainability.
Working closely with executive leadership, this position will shape fundraising priorities and develop strategies that support organizational growth.

This position requires a collaborative professional who can create compelling donor materials and manage complex development initiatives.

Accountabilities:

The Development Director will lead the organization’s fundraising efforts by developing major gift strategies, cultivating donor relationships, and creating systems that support sustainable growth. This role requires close collaboration with senior leadership, strong project management skills, and the ability to translate organizational impact into compelling fundraising narratives.

  • Develop and execute major gift fundraising strategies in partnership with executive leadership, including donor prioritization, portfolio management, and engagement plans.
  • Manage relationships with major donors through written communications, phone calls, meetings, stewardship activities, and ongoing engagement.
  • Conduct prospect research and identify new opportunities for donor and foundation support.
  • Lead preparation of donor materials, including pitch decks, proposals, grant narratives, donor briefs, and organizational background documents.
  • Support fundraising outreach efforts through research, meeting preparation, follow-ups, and relationship tracking.
  • Create innovative donor engagement strategies, solicitation approaches, and stewardship initiatives to expand financial support.
  • Advise senior leaders on fundraising goals, development priorities, projections, and relationship management strategies.
  • Monitor fundraising activity, track progress toward goals, and identify opportunities to improve development performance.
  • Maintain accurate development records and support CRM management processes.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure fundraising materials effectively communicate organizational priorities, impact, and future plans.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high-quality work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Participate in donor meetings and travel as needed.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate will bring significant nonprofit fundraising experience, strong communication abilities, and a passion for mission-driven work. This position requires someone who can independently manage development initiatives while collaborating effectively with senior leadership and cross-functional teams.

  • 5+ years of experience in nonprofit, political fundraising, advocacy, or media development roles.
  • At least 3 years of experience directly soliciting major gifts.
  • Proven experience managing major donor relationships and foundation fundraising initiatives.
  • Experience creating donor-facing materials such as proposals, presentations, decks, and strategic communications.
  • Experience supporting principal-level donor management and high-level fundraising efforts.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills with the ability to communicate organizational impact effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and projects.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce or similar CRM platforms.
  • Ability to work closely with executive leadership and provide strategic fundraising support.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment requiring flexibility and initiative.
  • Ability to build systems, processes, and workflows within a growing organization.
  • Strong alignment with the organization’s mission and commitment to equity, inclusion, and social impact.
  • Willingness and ability to travel, including occasional evening or weekend commitments.
